The Assassin’s Creed movie project already looked promising with the talents of Michael Fassbender on board, but now the video game adaptation has got a serious boost with the announcement that Robert Downey Jr will be joining the cast.

According to International Business Times, Downey Jr, ‘Iron Man’ himself, will play the famed Italian renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, which also reveals that the film will be more inspired by Assassin’s Creed II, which was set in Rome during the renaissance, as opposed to the first game.

Fassbender has long been attached to the title role of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, but has repeatedly stated that script problems have been the source of delays. With the latest news of casting, hopefully the wheels will move just that little bit faster.

Assassins Creed currently has no release date, but is being developed by Ubisoft’s new movie studio, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, and will be distributed worldwide by Twentieth Century Fox.
