After Robert Downey Jr confirmed that Iron Man 4 would be happening, and then subsequently retracted that statement, the beloved actor has now been officially linked to the third film in the Captain America franchise.

According to Variety, Captain America 3 will feature Downey Jr and Chris Evans alongside one another, and the film is set to be the springboard for the Civil War storyline from the comics. As such, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers will be on opposite sides of the debate when it comes to the Superhero Registration Act. They will not be friends.

The Civil War story arc explores the registration act which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force for the authorities. This tears a divide between Iron Man and Captain America, forcing the Avengers to pick sides.

Captain America 3 is targeted to hit theaters in May 2016, and will be directed by the Russo brothers, who did a rather fine job on Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

If the reports are to be true, Captain America 3 sounds like it’s going to be a fairly major turning point in the Marvel cinematic universe, too…
