Captain America: Civil War is “Avengers 3.8” Says Anthony Mackie

Thinly-veiled hints to Marvel’s upcoming third Captain America movie, entitled Captain America: Civil War, have been coming in thick and fast since Marvel dropped the bomb on the studio’s upcoming plans for 2016 and beyond, and now the actors have a bit of leeway to share some details.

Anthony Mackie, who starred in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as Sam Wilson/Falcon, confirmed that he will be returning, and according to the actor, it seems that big things are planned for Mackie in the Marvel cinematic universe.

“I have a brand new costume; I’m full in effect,” Mackie told WTTG Fox 5 (via CBM). “I will tell you this: Cap 3 is gonna be everything you can imagine. Cap 2 was really Avengers 1.5, and Cap 3 is gonna be Avengers 3.8.”

“It’s so amazing to be a part of the Marvel universe. It’s so rare that you go into a movie, and you know the movie is gonna be good,” he added And Marvel does not settle for mediocre on any of their movies. And that is what’s so great. You can go as far as you want because you know they are going to make it look good.”

Mackie is one of many MCU players in the cast that also includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chadwick Boseman in his MCU debut as Black Panther, Daniel Bruhl in a mystery role, Frank Grillo as Crossbones, and potentially Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.

The film is set to be the springboard for the Civil War storyline from the comics. As such, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers will be on opposite sides of the debate when it comes to the Superhero Registration Act. They will not be friends.  The Civil War story arc explores the registration act which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force for the authorities. This tears a divide between Iron Man and Captain America, forcing the Avengers to pick sides.

Set to be directed once again by the Russo Brothers, Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 2016.
