8 Biggest Movies Of July 2015
We check out what big-screen blockbusters are heading your way this month.
While we’re braving the cold down here in South Africa, the big summer movie stretch in Hollywood is underway, and that means there are some massive blockbusters heading our way. Check out the biggest movies coming your way this month:
Terminator Genisys
3 July
Longtime fans of the Terminator franchise may have become somewhat sceptical since James Cameron’s 1991 classic Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger and the injection of some fresh blood in director Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) could transform Terminator: Genisys into a big-screen success. We got the chance to check out the film early and gave our thoughts in our Terminator: Genisys review.
Magic Mike XXL
3 July
2012’s Magic Mike proved to be one of the year’s more surprising smash hits, bringing in bucket-loads of money worldwide even with its tiny production budget. The film also solidified the leading-man status of star Channing Tatum, and the sequel is hitting cinemas this month, bringing more drama, dancing and humour. If you’ve got a girlfriend, you’re probably watching it this weekend.
Minions
10 July
Ever since Despicable Me introduced the mischievous yet clumsy yellow-skinned creatures known only as “minions”, the lovable little guys have developed into the franchise’s most popular asset and an instant cashcow in and of themselves. So it seemed only natural when a feature-length spinoff was announced. Minions tells a story set decades before the eponymous characters started working for Steve Carell’s Gru, as they come under the employment of supervillain Scarlett Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock).
Big Game
10 July
No movie year goes by without Samuel L Jackson appearing in something, and this time the beloved actor is playing the President of the United States. After Air Force One is shot down by terrorists, the President is helped by a young teenager camping in the woods near the crash. It’s a movie about survival, ridiculous outcomes and explosions, and it looks pretty entertaining.
Pixels
24 July
Adam Sandler’s recent movies have been less-than-satisfying, but Pixels, the upcoming sci-fi action comedy in which the past literally strikes back when retro video game characters like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong attack Earth, looks like something special. Game of Thrones‘ Peter Dinklage also appears in the film and the nostalgia-inducing CGI looks pretty incredible, so we’re in for this one.
Entourage
24 July
The boys are back! The Entourage TV show captivated millions a couple years ago, and now Eric (Kevin Connolly), Turtle (Jerry Ferrara), Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon), movie star Vince Chase (Adrian Grenier) and rutheless agent Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) are making their long-awaited comeback with a full-fledged feature movie. The film picks up just after the events of the final season with Ari now in control of a major studio and Vince wanting to star and direct a massive blockbuster. Of course, things are going to go wrong.
Kidnapping Freddy Heineken
24 July
The inside story of the planning, execution, rousing aftermath and ultimate downfall of the kidnappers of beer tycoon Alfred “Freddy” Heineken, which resulted in the largest ransom ever paid for an individual. It looks to be a fascinating tale which stars Jim Sturgess, Ryan Kwanten, and Sam Worthington.
Ant-Man
31 July
While The Avengers capped off Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2012, the second phase of the studio’s ongoing superhero saga will wrap up with a very different sort of film. Ant-Man may not be able to compete with Avengers: Age of Ultron as far as sheer scope, but the movie – which introduces Paul Rudd as costumed size-shifting hero Scott Lang – will finally bring the final members of the founding Avengers (in the comics) to the big screen.
