Here’s What To Look For In A Suit Jacket
The secret to looking sharp is wearing clothing that fits you well. Personal stylist, Tracy Gold, gives us tips on what to look for in our key wardrobe items.
A suit jacket is a versatile item to have in your wardrobe. Wear it with your suit trousers for that all-important business meeting or with a pair of jeans and a shirt for that hot date.
The key to making it a versatile wardrobe item is the fit. Here are a few things to look out for:
Tailored is always better. No matter what your shape, fitted looks better than boxy.
The key to comfort is in the width of the shoulder and how it fits under your arm. Get these two things right and you will always feel comfortable in your jacket.
If you have broad shoulders, make sure the jacket fits your shoulder width. If you have narrow shoulders, make use of shoulder pads to create the illusion that your shoulders are broader than they are without overdoing it.
Define your build with a jacket that narrows slightly in the waist and hip. Lots of excess fabric will just make your midsection look bigger than it is.
Tapered sleeves make your look more streamlined. If your sleeves are wide, they just add extra bulk to your torso. A tailored sleeve together with a defined waist and hip can take centimeters off your midsection.

Awesome article. I’ve got a really great suit jacket from Fabiani, it’s s few years old but the silk under cloth is loose in places (as there was a bit of a dry cleaning mishap). What can I do to fix this? Take it to a tailor?
