James Schrader will never forget his first touch in a Southland jersey.

The little known provincial rugby player had barely been on the field for two minutes in his Southland ITM Cup debut when he made a play against Auckland which has since developed into an internet sensation.

Replacement Auckland outside back Lolagi Visinia looked certain to score when he stretched out in the tackle of Southland wing Keanu Kahukura and went to place the ball over the try line in the 63rd minute of the game.

However, as Visinia was about to plant the ball Schrader swooped, sliding into the in-goal to snatch the ball in a play which had commentator Scotty Stevenson salivating.

“That is one of the great try-saving moments ever,” Stevenson said in his commentary.

“That is an unreal piece of D.”
