Sonny Bill Williams Gives His World Cup Medal To Young Boy [Video]
SBW delivers another heartfelt moment in the Rugby World Cup.
Sonny Bill Williams hasn’t just been a true gent off the field, but played some incredile rugby on it too. We’ve already highlighted him as one of the best players of the tournament, but the All Black centre made another incredible gesture to a young fan who stormed the pitch following New Zealand’s 34-17 win in the Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham.
The young boy, who jumped the security barrier to give Williams a hug, was tackled to the ground by a security guard in front of the code-hopping star.
Williams immediately helped the boy to his feet and told the security guard it was OK, then put his arm around the kid and walked alongside him back to the boy’s mother in the stands.
Williams then removed his World Cup winner’s medal and draped it over the young boy’s head, showcasing a true sense of generosity and kindness.
‘I was walking around doing a lap of honour with the boys and a young fella came running out and he got smoked by the security guard, like full on tackled him,’ Williams said after the game.
“He would have been eight or seven, I kind of felt sorry for him. It will be a night that he remembers hopefully.”
This was the second touching yet unexpected display of sportsmanship and goodwill, as last week, Sonny Bill Williams knelt beside Springbok Jesse Kriel as he processed South Africa’s Rugby Union World Cup semi final loss, embracing the young centre and comforting him.
