7 games that should be on your christmas list

The season of giving is here, and as you scramble to work out what to ask others (or perhaps yourself) for Christmas, there are a handful of impressive games that you should hope to be poking out of your reindeer-laden stocking this year:

Just Cause 3

Available on: Xbox One, PS4, PC

While just recently-released, this is one of the most explosive and downright enjoyable games to come out all year. We’ve got our hands on Just Cause 3 and can wholeheartedly say that its adrenaline-inducing stunts, fiery action, gorgeous visuals, and tongue-in-cheek humour have got us nodding in approval. The open-world action sequel sees returning protagonist Rico Rodriguez battling an evil dictatorship in his home country – so if you’re in the mood for some explosions, guns, and a lot of stunts, Just Cause 3 should be top of your list.

Dying Light

Available on: Xbox One, PS4, PC

Not in a very long time have we felt the level of anxiety, fear and pure paranoia as having played Dying Light. Techland’s open-world zombie-parkour-survival mash-up may look like an idea cashing in on a few popular cultural phenomenons, but it’s actually one of the most interesting, well-designed and unique experiences seen on the current generation of consoles. So, should you get Dying Light? Well, if Rambo movies, George Romero-esque zombie flicks, and the idea of drop-kicking zombies into spikes tickles your fancy, then the answer is a resounding ‘yes’.

Fallout 4

Available on: Xbox One, PS4, PC

Obviously, if you’re looking for sheer scale and immersion, Fallout 4 has little competition.  The extensive gameplay and unique scenarios of Fallout 4 make it one of the best games that we’ve ever played. It encompasses a whole host of aspects of other RPGs while injecting its own trademark Fallout humour and charm into the world. The result is something quite spectacular, and Bethesda have outdone themselves this time. If you’re a lover of deep RPGs, punchy slow-motion gunplay, and giant open-worlds, Fallout 4 is a winner.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

Available on: Xbox One, Xbox 360

We’re afraid this is for Xbox One owners only (currently). The Tomb Raider reboot was a refreshing take on the life and antics of a young Lara Croft, and injected some new blood into a somewhat dying franchise. We saw Lara go from scared 20-something to becoming an artifact-hunting heroine in the first game, and Rise of the Tomb Raider will continues that journey, as Lara must now explore the most treacherous and remote regions of Siberia to find the secret of immortality before a ruthless organisation known as Trinity. The game looks and plays incredibly and there’s a host of new survival skills, weapons, abilities, and things to explore. Action adventure fans should have this earmarked already, and Christmas is a good time to hunt it down.

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection

Available on: PS4

If ever a trilogy of last-gen games was worthy of a next-gen remastering – then this award-winning Playstation-exclusive series is it. Comprising of Drake’s Fortune, Among Thieves and Drake’s Deception – we see treasure hunting Nathan Drake span the globe partaking in perilous white-knuckle adventures, all with incredibly intuitive gameplay among the backdrop of some gorgeously luscious jungles, deserts, and ancient cities. If you have somehow never played these games (shame on you), or perhaps want to give them another spin, this collection is a must-own.

Uncharted 2

Batman: Arkham Knight

Available on: Xbox One, PS4, PC

Much like Christopher Nolan having to achieve expectations and bring a climactic close to his Dark Knight film trilogy, developer Rocksteady had a massive task at hand to send the Arkham trilogy off with a bang. The result is Arkham Knight, which features everything we love about the franchise, peppered with some new elements to mix up the bad-guy beatdown sessions a bit more; and Rocksteady’s final game for the franchise did the caped crusader proud. Rocksteady did a great job at rounding up the loose-ends of their massive Batman franchise, and fans of the series will be pleased with the new additions, even if they aren’t  executed in the most tactful ways.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Available on: Xbox One, PS4, PC

There’s one word that’s fitting to round up the The Witcher 3:  colossal. It’s a game rich with story, content, and size. Often bigger isn’t always better, but The Witcher 3 manages to straddle that line between size and substance excellently. The result is an experience that succeeds in all departments and leaves you captivated from the opening moments.

Glad to see Dying Light in there, my Fav game of the year. Think its worth adding Metal Gear Solid and Blood Bourne in here also.
