First person shooters 2016

If there’s one guarantee for gamers in 2016 (or any other year for that matter), it’s that we’re certain to be getting an abundance of first-person shooters. Gaming’s most popular genre will be flying its flag high this year, but what are some of the most original FPS games heading our way in 2016?

Lawbreakers

Release date: 2016 (PC)

Coming from the mind of Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski, Lawbreakers is an upcoming free-to-play team-based arena shooter. This PC-only title focuses on futuristic law enforcement officers attempting to repel marauding gangs which have clubbed together and attempted to take the US. The moon was also the subject of clandestine testing and has shattered, leading to pockets of zero-gravity which can be exploited. It looks and sounds pretty interesting, and with the creative talent behind it, we’ll be keeping a close eye on Lawbreakers.

Homefront: The Revolution

Release date: 20 May 2016 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

Set four years after the original Homefront (which while having a compelling story, did leave some mixed reviews), Homefront: The Revolution follows protagonist Ethan Brady as he struggles to reclaim the city of Philadelphia from an alternate, reunified Korea, which is using the city as its central base after invading the country years ago. This first-person shooter promises a large, open world and a variety of tasks to discover and complete.

Doom

Release date: 13 May 2016 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

It’s been way too long since we’ve taken it upon ourselves to rid the virtual world of grotesque demons via gruesome chainsaw kills, but thankfully Bethesda will give us a chance to raise hell in next year’s reimagined version of the id Software classic. This new edition comes with the same quality shooting we’ve come to love since the 90s, but with outstanding gore-filled visuals. Players will be able to carve up monsters a variety of ways, and the new melee finishing moves, like head-crushing and jaw-removals, will add some extra juiciness to the game.

Superhot

Release date: Q1 2016 (PC, Xbox One)

“Time moves only when you move.” That’s the gist of Superhot, a stylish first-person shooter that started out as a small prototype made for a game jam. One Kickstarter and a year and a half later, Superhot is a dynamically paced and strategic action game that has the concept to match its unique looks, and we’re not letting out of our sights.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3

Release date: Q2 2016 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

Moving from a semi-linear to an open world model, this upcoming title in the Ghost Warrior series puts you in the role of a special forces operative behind enemy lines where he shouldn’t be. The environment looks like it will play a huge role in this game, as you have to deal with adverse weather affecting your equipment, use ropes to scale up and down cliff faces, and activate drones to survey the area before heading out and getting killed by hidden obstacles.
