What Movies Are Releasing In SA This Weekend?
The weekend is around the corner and if you’re looking for a relaxed trip to the cinemas this weekend, and there’s a lot of choice on offer with some big releases launching this Friday, 8 May, so here’s your handy guide on what you should be watching:
Unfinished Business
Those looking for a new Vince Vaughn comedy will be glad to know that he has teamed up with James Franco and Sienna Miller for Unfinished Business. A hard-working small business owner (Vaughn) and his two associates travel to Europe to close the most important deal of their lives. But what began as a routine business trip goes off the rails in every imaginable – and unimaginable – way, including unplanned stops at a massive sex fetish event and a global economic summit.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2
Whether or not this movie should even exist is debatable, but, it does. Paul Blart is headed to Las Vegas to attend the Security Guard Expo, with his teenage daughter, Maya, before she departs for college. While at the convention, he inadvertently discovers a heist—and it’s up to him to apprehend the criminals. Kevin James returns, along with Raini Rodriguez, Neal McDonough, and Shirley Knight.
Child 44
Tom Hardy stars in this politically-charged serial killer thriller set in 1953 Soviet Russia that chronicles the crisis of conscience for secret police agent Leo Demidov, who loses status, power and home when he refuses to denounce his own wife, Raisa, as a traitor. Leo and Raisa join forces with General Mikhail Nesterov to track down a serial killer who preys on young boys.
Yellowbird
If you’re looking for some animated entertainment this weekend, Yellowbird should deliver. The movie is about a teeny tiny orphaned bird. He’s never left the nest and has no family, but desperately wants one. That is, until he finds himself leading a flock on their annual migration to Africa.
The film features the voice talents of Seth Green, Dakota Fanning, Jim Rash, Yvette Nicole Brown, Christine Baranski, Richard Kind, Danny Glover, and Elliott Gould.
Lullaby
And for the drama-lovers, Lullaby should be on your must-watch list. The film follows a man (Garrett Hedlund) who has been estranged from his family for years receives word that his father (Richard Jenkins) has chosen to take himself off life support within 48 hours. When he decides to race to the old man’s side to say his goodbyes, he knows he will also have to mend some old fences with the rest of his family.

I’m too keen for Unfinished Business. Vince Vaughn movies always promise a few laughs, the last one he was in – the one where he was the father to 500 kids – wasn’t great but also wasn’t terrible. Dave Franco has been killing it recently. His Cameo in 22 Jump Street was hilarious and was pretty good in Bad Neighbors.
I’m going to skip Lullaby and Paul Blart (and possibly Yellowbird). Don’t think I’ll watch Child 44 at the Movies, will wait for it to go on to DSTV on Demand.
