6 Video Game Movies Heading Our Way In 2016 And Beyond
Which console, PC and portable games are making their jump to the silver-screen in 2015 and beyond?
There are some big-name sequels, reboots, and new Hollywood blockbusters coming out in the near future, but there are also some massive video game adaptations hitting the big-screen too.
Here’s give to keep your eyes on:
The Angry Birds Movie
The unrelentingly popular Angry Birds is being turned into a movie. That’s right, you’ll be seeing some big-screen avian friends delivering death to those pesky swines in a glorious full-feature film in 2016. The 3D animation film is being produced by Sony Pictures Imageworks and it’s rumoured to have a budget of $80 million. Jason Sudeikis will be voicing “Red”, the main bird, with Bill Hader as the Minion Pigs and Peter Dinklage (aka Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones) as the “Mighty Eagle”.
Expected to be released May 2016.
Warcraft
The Warcraft movie has had its time in development hell in Hollywood over the years, but Blizzard Entertainment’s epic war story is finally in the works. The film is to depict the long-winded war between the human race and orcs (similar to the first game), and has been given a budget of over $100m. Paula Patton, Toby Kebbell, Dominic Cooper (aka Howard Stark from Captain America) will star. Expect something that’s a cross between Game of Thrones and Avatar, with a lot of brutal war sequences.
Expected to be released June 2016.
Assassin’s Creed
The action-adventure game series by Ubisoft has long been poised to become a film. Thanks to Ubisoft creating its own production company, that is now a reality. The Assassin’s Creed film will follow protagonist Desmond Miles, who enters a machine known as the Animus, which lets the user access ancestral memories. Miles will relive the conflict between the Knights Templar and the Assassins, of which he is a descendant. Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard have been tied to the film, with Robert Downey Jr. also rumoured to be starring.
Expected to be released December 2016.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
Milla Jovovich will return as Alice in a post zombie-apocalypse world that has been inflicted with the T-Virus. It will be the sixth and final film in the Resident Evil series, and was filmed in our very-own South Africa. Ali Larter will also return as Claire Redfield.
Expected to be released January 2017.
Uncharted
The brilliant action-adventure game, developed by Naughty Dog, is to be made into a film. The story follows Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter, and his journey across the world trying to decipher mysteries. Mark Wahlburg was initially onboard, but has since bowed out. Nathan Fillion has also expressed interest in the role, but all we know is that Mark Boal (writer and producer of Zero Dark Thirty) is currently working on the script.
Expected to be released June 2017.
Tomb Raider
Rumour are spreading that another Tomb Raider movie could soon be coming to our screens featuring a young Lara Croft. Evan Daugherty (who wrote the script for Divergent) is said to be working on the film’s script. The Tomb Raider series, featuring Angelina Jolie, was the highest grossing video game-to-film adaptation ever made. Camilla Luddington, who voiced Lara Croft in the 2013 video game reboot, is said to be one of the actresses being considered for the role, along with Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ Daisy Ridley as one of the other frontrunners.
