Games of January

2015 was a pretty big year for gaming with some massive titles hitting the shelves throughout each quarter and delivering some epic experiences. But 2016 is here and it’s time to look forward to what awaits hungry gamers.

Here are the biggest games of January 2016:

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India

12 January 2016

While it’s inevitable we will be getting another full-blown Assassin’s Creed game later this year, fans of roof-jumping and stabbing things can keep themselves busy with Assassin’s Creed: India, one of the spin-off games in the AC universe. As part of the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles series, the game will differ stylistically from most previous entries in the franchise, being set on 2.5D plane. Players take control of a new assassin, Arbaaz Mir, in Amritsar 1841, in the midst of a war between the Sikh Empire and the East India Company, but of course, those pesky Templars are up to no good and it’s up to Arbaaz to foil their plans.

Gone Home

12 January 2016

Gone Home is an atmospheric first-person story game. There’s no points, no enemies. It’s just you and an empty house with a story — well, stories — to tell. And soon it’ll be on your Xbox One and PlayStation 4, If you’re looking for a sombre yet emotional narrative-driven game, Gone Home should be on your list this month.

Life Is Strange

22 January 2016

Life is Strange is a five part episodic game that sets out to revolutionise story-based choice and consequence games by allowing the player to rewind time and affect the past, present and future. It’s taken in some good reviews and should be on your radar this month. You play as Max, a photography senior who saves her old friend Chloe by discovering she can rewind time. The pair soon find themselves exposed to the darker side of Arcadia Bay, having uncovered the disturbing truth behind the sudden disappearance of a fellow student.

Resident Evil 0

Resident Evil 0 is a prequel to the classic Resident Evil game that follows Rebecca and Billy on their misadventures through the hellhole that is Raccoon City. Mutant experiments and undead citizens haunt the city streets and underground, and our protagonists must fight and survive to uncover the truth behind the outbreak. This remaster includes updated visuals, as well as new game modes that freshen the experience.

Resident Evil Origins Collection

22 January 2016

The Origins Collection takes all of the hot and steamy eye action we can anticipate from Resident Evil 0 HD and bundles it together with last year’s excellent remaster of the Resident Evil remake.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

22 January 2016

In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, the iconic Mario Bros. encounters Paper Mario, and the trio join forces to save the day. Paper Mario is a resourceful ally who can copy himself, fold into various paper craft shapes, slip into cracks, and help the Mario Bros. on their journey to defeat Bowser. Paper Mario also lends a hand in combat, introducing his own paper-style attacks to the turn-based coop action of the Mario & Luigi series.

Zombi

21 January 2016

While the Wii U isn’t necessarily known for its mature games, one of the standout titles was the gory survival horror, ZombiU, which released during its launch period. The game was ported to PC, Xbox One, and PS4 (albeit with some slight visual and feature enhancements) but was only available via digital download, but now the game is getting a physical release in January. In Zombi, you have to battle through a hellish London overrun by a zombie apocalypse, using nothing else but some melee weapons, a handful of guns, and a crafting system to survive.

LEGO Marvel’s Avengers

29 January 2016

The Lego games are always silly, light-hearted fun. Lego Marvel’s Avengers follows the plots of The Avengers films and their many tie-in movies. The game also incorporates hundreds of iconic characters from across the Marvel universe. You can expect lots of Lego-inspired puzzles, platforming, and exploration as you play through the events of the films. From Sokovia to Tony Stark’s Miami mansion, Lego Avengers makes what’s old new — and hopefully even funnier in brick form.

Darkest Dungeon

19 January 2016

Darkest Dungeon is a roguelike, dungeon crawler video game created by indie game developer Red Hook Studios. The game has the player manage a roster of heroes to explore dungeons below a gothic mansion the player has inherited. Played out in a mix of real-time movement and turn-based combat, a core feature of Darkest Dungeon is the stress level of each hero that increases with further exploration and combat; a character sustaining a high stress level may gain afflictions that will hamper, or possibly enhance, their performance as an explorer.

The Witness

26 January 2016

The Witness is the next major game release from the man behind Braid. It’s a first-person puzzle game, where you’re on an island devoid of life but full of the remnants of life. There are puzzles strewn all over the place and a variety of structures you can explore, but what is the meaning of it all? That’s up for you to discover, often through audio diaries or environmental clues. The Witness is a quiet, smart game that’s full of secrets. We’ll finally have a chance to discover them when it launches this month for PlayStation 4 and PC.
