We take a look at the games hitting retail outlets and online stores across SA this week.

This week sees a fair amount of re-releases hitting the market, giving gamers who missed out on previous blockbusters another chance to appreciate what they have to offer. That said, there are some new releases worth taking note of.

Here’s our picks of the week:

Alekhine’s Gun

Release date: 1 March 2016 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Essentially Hitman-with-hair, Alekhine’s Gun‘s is a third-person stealth-action game that throws players into the shoes of Agent Alekhine, a highly skilled Russian assassin working alongside American CIA agents during the Cold War. Using the environments, traps, and some brutal close-up kills, players will need to take down those responsible to ensure the future of the US. It looks like an interesting distraction as a warm-up for Hitman.

Broforce

Release date: 1 March 2016 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Broforce has already been blowing up PCs, and now the game is making its way to PS4.

The game puts players in control of “an under-funded, over-powered paramilitary organization dealing exclusively in excessive force.” This side-scrolling action game is reminiscent of the likes of Contra, but instead of some generic joes, you get to play the game as a number of bro-infused heroes, like Rambro, Brommander, MacBrover, and Bronan the Barbarian.

Broforce also features a co-op component for up to four players, upping each level’s potential for explosive chaos. Each level ends with a ceremonial raising of the American flag and a quick escape via helicopter as explosions erupt below. Classic.

Heavy Rain

Release date: 1 March 2016 (PS4)

Heavy Rain is an ambitious project that tells a complex story through contextual actions and realistic visuals. Embracing the idea of “interactive storytelling,” the game is built around an emotive and compelling proposition: “How far would you go to save someone you love?” The game was quite the hit on PS3 and should pull in some new fans with its jump to PS4.

Mortal Kombat XL

Release date: 1 March 2016 (Xbox One, PS4)

Mortal Kombat XL, which consists of the base game and both DLC Kombat Packs, releases this week for bloodthirsty-gamers. In addition to last year’s fantastic fighting game, the package features the new playable characters released post-launch: Alien, Leatherface, Triborg, Bo’Rai Cho, Predator, Jason Voorhees, Tremor, Tanya, and Goro. It also includes the new skins pack Apocalypse Pack and all previously released skins packs.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD

Release date: 1 March 2016 (Wii U)

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD remake for the Wii U does more than just pretty up the game to new HD graphics. New to this version is an item called the “Ghost Lantern”, it glows when near a Poe making the Poe soul-retrieving quest easier to complete. Hero Mode can also be selected from the beginning of the game and makes the game much more difficult.

The GamePad also gives the game much easier controls by allowing players to access map and inventory at any time using the touch screen, quickly transform into a wolf, access Miiverse, and play the game in off-TV mode. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD launches with a Wolf Link amiibo, and features amiibo support.

Black Desert Online

Release date: 3 March 2016 (PC)

Black Desert is a large scale of sandbox oriented MMORPG that provides you a variety of unique experiences with spectacular action and battle, strategy-based castle siege, sophisticated simulation contents such as trade, NPC-hiring and real estate management. Black Desert Online is looking like it could develop that cult following that makes it a permanent fixture.
