Apps of the week May

We scoured the app stores on various platforms to find the best apps out there at the moment. Here’s our picks of the week:

Sea Hero Quest

A mobile game launched this week that could help crack the riddle of dementia. Called Sea Hero Quest, the game involves navigating a boat around a fictional world, memorising maps, sailing through mazes, and searching for landmarks. Experts hope 100,000 people will download and play the free game – enough to generate 57 years’ worth of data. It’s a great initiative and one which we should all get involved in.

Available on Android and iOS.

Radon

Radon is a unique application that allows you to share links with just about anyone that’s close enough to you. The app takes advantage of the newer Nearby APIs and doesn’t require other people to be on the same WiFi network, Bluetooth connection, or even have NFC on for it to work. The idea is that you shoot a link out and anyone with the Radon app open can accept the link and open it. There are some early release bugs, but the app does work and it’s pretty nifty.

Younity

This app turns your PC at home into a media server, allowing you to access all of your videos, photos, and music from your smartphone whenever you wish… well, as long as both devices are connected to the Internet, of course.

Available on iOS and Android.

You can chat one on one or do group messaging. The app supports sending text, photos and documents, and is also available on desktop.

Swipe for Facebook

Swipe is a Facebook browser, which claims to be much lighter and faster than the official app, and that it doesn’t clog your RAM or fill your cache with gigabytes worth of data. It’s a “wrapper” app, which means that, essentially, it shows you the mobile version of the Facebook website, but re-skins it in a way that makes it look like a beautiful Android app.

Recolor – Coloring Book

Adult colouring books are all the craze these days, and of course, there’s now an app for it. As can be expected, you’ve got your set of complex pictures to just zone out to and start filling the blanks using a vast colour palette. It may not be as therapeutic as the real thing, but not a bad option while on the bus or waiting for a meeting.
