Ghostbusters

Release date: 29 July 2016

The all-female rebooted Ghostbusters film seems to have fans sceptical, but there’s no denying it has enough star power and talent behind it to deliver something special. Bridesmaids and Spy director Paul Feig is behind this one, with Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth all starring.

What we thought: MenStuff got the chance to check out the film at an early screening, and it’s safe to say that Ghostbusters successfully reinvigorates the franchise for a new generation.

The original 1984 Ghostbusters is a classic and always will be, but the new Ghostbusters is funnier, more explosive, and has a whole lot of heart to it. The new cast is as diverse and bizarre as you’d hope, and film itself undoubtedly takes a more blockbuster approach to the franchise rather than the campy attitude of the original, but it manages to hold onto the charm and appeal that made the franchise so enjoyable in the first place.

Jason Bourne

Release date: 29 July 2016

America sure has spent a lot of money trying to save Matt Damon over the years, but thankfully his new film, Jason Bourne, is a more self-reliant role. The fifth Bourne movie picks up 12 years after we last saw the amnesiac super-spy in The Bourne Ultimatum, when Jason Bourne begins to remember his dark past and seek to finish his tale of revenge once and for all.

The film reunites Damon with Julia Stiles, who played female lead Nicky Parsons in the three previous Bourne-centric adventures. (Like Damon, she sat out the fourth film, The Bourne Legacy, which Jeremy Renner starred in.) New characters will include Alicia Vikander as a cyberspecialist, Tommy Lee Jones as a tough CIA agent, and Vincent Cassel as a villain. The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass returns to the helm.

Captain Fantastic

Release date: 29 July 2016

Aragorn himself, Mr. Viggo Mortensen, makes a return in Captain Fantastic, although instead of stabbing orcs in the face, he plays a desperate father attempting to create the perfect world for his children. Ben (Mortensen) pursues this ideal in an extreme way – by removing his family from society altogether and creating his own little utopia in the Pacific Northwest wilderness. Ben has to come to terms with the realisation that such a sealed-off existence is inevitably impossible. This looks to be a one that will pull on the heart-strings, while delivering a few laughs.
