This week at the cinema sees some gun-running shenanigans, a buddy-cop comedy for a new generation, and a psychological thriller that could be the sleeper-hit of the month. Here’s our picks for the movies releasing Friday, 2 September 2016:

War Dogs

Friday, 2 September 2016

Much like The Wolf of Wall Street, War Dogs falls under the bizarre-yet-true story category. Directed by The Hangover‘s Todd Philips, the film follows two young arms dealers, David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli (played by Jonah Hill and Miles Teller), who won a $300 million contract from the Pentagon to supply weapons to American allies in Afghanistan in 2007. At first overwhelmed by the prospect of being rich, the unlikely international arms dealer duo soon find themselves in danger abroad and beset with difficulties back home.

Skiptrace

Friday, 2 September 2016

It’s been a while since we’ve had a good buddy-cop flick, and Skiptrace could be something to fill that void this weekend. Bennie Chan (Jackie Chan), a detective from Hong Kong, has been investigating a notorious criminal named Victor Wong for over a decade. When his niece gets involved with Wong’s syndicate, Chan must track down and convince Connor Watts (Johnny Knoxville), a fast-talking American gambler, to team up and return to China in order to rescue his niece and foil the Chinese kingpin.

The 9th Life of Louis Drax

Friday, 2 September 2016

Aaron Paul, Jamie Dornan, and Sarah Gadon star in this adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name. The story follows young Louis Drax who suffers a near-fatal injury and falls into a deep coma on his 9th birthday. Determined to solve the young boy’s strange affliction, Dr. Allan Pascal (Dornan) begins exploring the mysterious circumstances surrounding the boy’s accident, blurring the line between fantasy and reality.
