Titanfall vs Infamous: Second Son – which is better?

Both Titanfall and Infamous: Second Son have proven to be console-sellers, with Titanfall boosting the Xbox One sales and SuckerPunch’s third Infamous outing giving the PS4 a kickstart, but which next-gen exclusive is better?

It’s hard to compare two vastly different games, as Respawn’s new IP Titanfall’s multiplayer-centric FPS style gameplay has garnered its own audience, while Infamous is building upon the foundations of its predecessors, elaborating on the third-person super-powered formula of the first two games. That said, if it came down to picking one (and its respective console), which one impressed the critics more?

Titanfall currently sits on a Metacritic of 86 and 86.18% on GameRankings for the Xbox One version. Infamous: Second Son, on the other hand, sits with a Metascore of 80, while its GameRanking is 81.68%. So Titanfall seems to have ended up in the lead in terms of score aggregates, but this means only so much, as the opinions on the games is where it counts.

TITANFALL

GamesRadar – 4/5: “Titanfall blends familiar concepts with innovative ideas in remarkable ways, leading to a nearly nonstop supply of awesome moments. But for as fun as it is, you’ll likely find yourself wishing Respawn was more ambitious when it comes to game modes, since there’s a good chance you’ve captured enough flags for one lifetime.”

GameSpot – 9/10: “The overarching experience of playing Titanfall is one of rejuvenation and reinvigoration. The sprint speed, the arsenal, the game modes, and more are all firmly derived from some of the most successful online shooters of recent years. But by reinventing the way you move, Titanfall reinvents what it feels like to play a competitive shooter. The high-flying action intertwines beautifully with the brutish, tactical titan battles, creating battlefields that crackle with possibility. Titanfall is a leap forward for shooters, a game that combines the vibrant and new with the tried and true to create something special.”

VideoGamer – 8/10: “For all its strengths, its reliance on tried and true modes and rigid maps stops Titanfall achieving its full potential. Capture the Flag, Attrition, and Domination are the best gametypes, but none of them show the same invention that’s occurring elsewhere in the title, leading to a feeling of natural fatigue. Some of the maps also feel too similar to each other, lacking in distinction, and campaign multiplayer is sadly non-dynamic. A very good first instalment then, but the best is yet to come.”

GamesRadar: 3.5/5 – “A beautiful, but shallow, game with a handful of interesting ideas. It’s a decent stop-gap until better PS4 exclusives appear.”

GameSpot: 8/10 – “Second Son focuses on pure enjoyment. It communicates that through the excellent combat that forces you to concoct crazy tactics to overthrow the invading forces. It draws you in further through its incredible visuals that not only hint at the PlayStation 4’s impressive power, but employ a sensible artistic touch that makes Seattle a place you want to explore. It uses a complementary score to underline dramatic moments, and the sound effects pop with flair. And yet, for all of the elements in which Second Son excels, the narrative fails to carry its share of the weight.”

VideoGamer: 7/10 – “While Second Son rations all the good stuff, leaving too little too late, the novelty alone is worth a punt.”

VERDICT

It appears that the sum of all Titanfall’s parts outweighs that of what Infamous: Second Son has to offer, so when it comes to the tidier and more impressive experience, Titanfall seems to be the contender to scratch the next-gen itch.
