Yup – we knew it was coming, but we didn’t know exactly what was coming. Samsung has finally unveiled its latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S8, and we’ve got all the details you need to know about the highly-anticipated device.

So, what is it exactly?

Well, it’s a Galaxy, and while we were expecting something along the lines of what was revealed, there are a few standout features worth taking note of.

Firstly, the new Infinity Display that stretches across the front of the Galaxy S8 is rather eye-catching, literally. The somewhat massive 5.8-inch screen, that wraps its way around most of the phone, features retina scanning and HDR, so images and video will be clearer, brighter and more vivid than ever before.

The second big change is the addition of another key on the phone, which will take you to the Bixby assistant. This is Samsung’s killer-shot in the smartphone AI competition, providing a Siri-like a contextual assistant that can work out what you need through voice, touch or the camera.

The internal storage space has also seen a bump-up, and now offers 64GB onboard, as opposed to the usual 32GB we see with most devices on the market.

As for the phone design itself, the new screen stretches across the edges of the device much like the Samsung Galaxy Edge devices, albeit not as drastic. Gone is the home button, which has now been replaced with a pressure-sensitive pad, much like that on the iPhone 7, along with a fingerprint-scanner on the back of the phone alongside the camera lens.

What about the camera?

The camera hasn’t seen a massive upgrade since the Galaxy S7, as the S8 still boasts the 12MP rear-facing camera, which, to be fair, is pretty impressive as is. That said, the front-facing camera has been given a boost and now sports an 8MP shooter.

When can I get it?

The Galaxy S8 will be available worldwide on 28 April 2017.

How much does it cost?

Samsung has slapped the Galaxy S8 with a $799 price tag, which is a hefty cost considering it comes in at almost R10,500 (TBC).

Our take:

The Galaxy S8 sure is an attention-grabbing smartphone. It’s sleek, well-designed and features a gorgeous display. The new features all sound promising, but until we see them in action, we’ll be cautiously optimistic. That said, Samsung has delivered in the past and we’re somewhat certain they’ll do it once again.
