It’s that time again where we take a look at some of the best apps available on the Google Play and iOS stores. This week, there’s a mix of everything – from games to education apps. So, without further ago, here they are:

GlassWire

Data in South Africa is a rare commodity, and not to mention that it costs a fortune. That’s why seeing it vanish is admittedly heartbreaking. But, of course, there’s an app to keep tabs on things. GlassWire tracks your data usage, showing you what apps are connecting, how much data they use, and how often they do it. It can offer insight to how your device is using your data. Additionally, it helps you identify potential threats or data heavy apps that you may not want running loose. The interface is clean, colourful, and extremely easy to use.

mySOS SA

Using your smartphone as a safety device is important, and mySOS wants to give South Africans access to the closest and most appropriate service providers in the event of an emergency. The app offers links to several emergency service providers, medical aids, insurance and security companies. It also has a timer users can set, and an SOS contact that will be SMSed in the event that the timer runs out.

Taxify

Uber rules the streets at the moment, but they’re not the only app-based taxi service on SA’s roads. After a somewhat slow launch in the country, Taxify introduced its smartphone app which works very-much like that of Uber’s. Users have reported better rates and service than other competitors on the market, and payments can be made without credit cards or your smartphone.

Transformers: Forged to Fight

Most fighting games on mobile don’t really deliver, but there’s more than meets the eye with this particular game. Transformers: Forged to Fight is the latest freemium game that leverages the history and characters of the beloved alien-robot franchise. Essentially an action-RPG, Forged to Fight allows you to collect various bots from the Transformers universe, and battle other players for supremacy in the leaderboards. It features decent graphics, large combat environments, and some action packed scenes. It suffers from the usual freemium pitfalls. However, aside from the odd freemium pitfall, it’s generated a decent community of players.

Skillshare is a great app with a plethora of online courses, with everything from business to photography available.  There are over 15,000 classes to choose from, but free users only get access to around 100. If you want the rest, and used up the 30 day free trial, you’re going to have to cough up a few bucks – but you can’t put a price on education, right?
