This week’s game releases see the return of a sci-fi stalwart, an anthropomorphic hedgehog, a crime-fighting force of fury, and a whole lot more! Here’s our picks for the game’s releasing 14-18 August 2017:

StarCraft: Remastered

Release date: 15 August 2017 (PC)

Fans of old-school real-time strategy games will need no introduction to the StarCraft series, but a remastered version of the first game is arriving this week to please veterans and entice newcomers who may have missed out. StarCraft: Remastered upgrades the essential sci-fi strategy experience and its award-winning expansion, StarCraft: Brood War, from beginning to end . Upgraded visuals for units, buildings, and environments, improved game audio, and resolutions have been improved. Most importantly, the strategy gameplay that StarCraft perfected years ago remains unchanged.

Agents of Mayhem

Release date: 18 August 2017 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Volition, the studio behind the successful Saints Row series have always had a knack of creating tongue-in-cheek games that, while admittedly silly, were actually pretty good. And the offbeat studio’s next project follows those lines but adds a dose of super-powered task-force into the mix. Agents of Mayhem takes cues from stereotypical A-team-inspired action shows, and throws them into a single-player, open-world third-person game set in Seoul. What makes Agents of Mayhem different is that before each mission you choose three out of the 12 agents to bring with you, and you can switch between these three at will.

Sonic Mania

Release date: 15 August 2017 (PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch)

Sonic Mania will try to tap into what made the original set of Sonic games so beloved back in the 16-bit era, and features classic-style visuals, gameplay, and both original levels and remixes of classic levels. It pretty much sounds like the Sonic game fans have been begging for for decades, and, at least based on the trailer, it looks like it might finally deliver.

Cities: Skylines

Release date: 15 August 2017 (PS4)

Cities: Skylines is a single-player open-ended city-building simulation, and it’s arriving on PS4 this week. Players engage in urban planning by controlling zoning, road placement, taxation, public services, and public transportation of an area. Players work to maintain various elements of the city, including its budget, health, employment, and pollution levels. Players are also able to maintain a city in a sandbox mode, which provides unrestricted creative freedom for the player.

Matterfall

Release date: 15 August 2017 (PS4)

Matterfall is an interesting-looking side-scrolling action game. Effectively, it’s an amped-up take on Contra. You’re a lone warrior dodging a hail of projectiles as you fight against and control a strange material known as Smart Matter. There’s no doubt that Matterfall will be extremely challenging (if Resogun, the developer’s previous title, is any indication), but it might also be satisfying when you finally defeat a boss or clear a level.
