Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice

The Playstation 4 has been delivering gems since its release, and this year has been no different. 2017 has provided us with a host of excellent games; and we thought we’d share some of the best that you should get your hands-on.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Coming from the team behind the underrated Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and the brilliant Devil May Cry reboot, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a third-person action game set in the Viking age. Players take control of Senua, a broken Celtic warrior who embarks on a haunting vision quest into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover. Strategic yet brutal melee combat is the order of the day in Hellblade, with strong elements of psychosis, so expect some trippy moments throughout the game.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

Following on from the stellar Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is essentially a standalone spin-off following the exploits of two tough female characters from the Uncharted universe, Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross. The story follows the two as they set aside their differences to work together to obtain an ancient artefact. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a brilliant addition to the Uncharted universe. There’s no denying that a little something is missing with the absence of series protagonist, Nathan Drake, but the new heroines and expanded ideas do confirm that there’s life in the Uncharted series, full of climbing, gunfights, emotional story beats, and high-octane action.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

There are some games that leave you questioning their quality even when you’re halfway through the experience. Horizon: Zero Dawn is not one of those games. From the outset, the first few minutes of this PS4 exclusive oozes triple-A pedigree – from the visuals, presentation, and snappy controls – it all looks and feels immaculate, and coming from the team behind the acclaimed Killzone series, we’d expect that. But Guerrilla Games have taken things a step further and delivered an experience that’s unique and different, but one that relies on the best bits of other games in the genre to create something spectacular. It’s a gorgeous visual romp through a post-apocalyptic Earth with gameplay that’s addictive yet challenging, which can be put alongside the likes of God of War 3The Last of Us, and the Uncharted series. This is a game you buy a PS4 to play.

Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age

Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age is a remaster of 2006’s Final Fantasy 12, albeit with a few tweaks and changes. The PS4 edition of the game features the beloved RPG mechanics of the original, but also includes the International Zodiac Job system that was part of the Japan version of the PS2 title. The job system allows a user to assign a role to a character, which provides them with unique skills and stat growth opportunities. If you missed out on the original over a decade ago, this is a great addition to any RPG fan’s library.

Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy

From HD remasters to re-re-re-releases, the gaming industry is going through a period of reminiscent throwbacks, and the latest franchise to get a revisit is the beloved bandicoot of our childhood, Crash. The Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy is a collection of high-definition remakes of the first three Crash Bandicoot games (Crash Bandicoot, Cortex Strikes Back, and Warped). The collection resurrects the anthropomorphic marsupial’s three original adventures with beautiful new visuals and animations. If you were a fan of the originals, you’ll love it; and if you never did get the chance to play them, you’re in for a treat.

Nier: Automata

While some gamers may have let the first Nier title slip by them, the sequel is one that you should not. Developed by the team behind Vanquish, Bayonetta and the under-appreciated Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Nier: Automata is a beautiful juxtaposition of action and RPG elements with pinpoint accurate combat mechanics. The combat mechanics click after hurdling a low learning curve, and the end result is a ballet of bullets and slashes that never ceases to tire. The fact that there’s multiple endings also gives Automata a great level of replay value.

Knack 2

The sequel to the PS4’s launch title, Knack, which introduced great physics-based puzzles and platforming, but couldn’t help leaving gamers feeling they had just played a tech demo rather than a game. But while Knack was the appetiser, Knack II is the main course. The sequel takes the concepts of the first game and improves upon them in multiple ways. Rather than a mish-mash of scenarios to show off the PS4’s physics rendering capabilities, Knack II is a far more story-orientated and focused game, providing a more enjoyable and familiar 3D platforming experience that fans of Crash Bandicoot would enjoy. Two-player co-op has also been added, giving those who love the LEGO games something akin to play. It is still targeted at younger audiences, and veteran gamers will find some of the puzzles and challenges easy, but it’s a fun distraction if you’re looking to play something with a partner or younger sibling.
