We’re about to cruise into summer in SA, and that means the jackets and boots are going back into the cupboards and it’s time for the shorts and summer sneakers to come out. The warm months call for a bit of a change of tack — all the dark tones are out and it’s time to get bright and colourful, meaning you can add a little more personality to the kicks that you decide to put on. We’re going to count down the top 5 summer sneakers to look out for!

Nike Flyknight Racer – Crew Blue

The Flyknit racer is a recent addition of Nike’s that took the sneaker world by storm and has become a mainstay for those that like their runners minimal and can be worn on a night out too. The Flyknit upper on this one is primarily made up of different shades of blue from the toe-box to the back, while the toe-box transitions into hits of neon green and yellow which makes for an eye-catching contrast. They’re lightweight and most fans say they’re extremely comfortable and breathable, so while the temperature go up, your feet will stay cool in more than one way.

Adidas Tubular Shadow – Footwear White

Everyone that’s flying the Adidas flag high is usually a fan of the NMD or the Ultra Boost, but a potential option for someone looking to stand out is the Tubular Shadow, which have a hint of Kanye West’s Yeezys which came out a while back. The upper is made of a light mesh that’s breathable and light, but since these are all-white, you’ll want to be careful of hitting the street too hard in them — but where’s the fun in that.

Superga 2750 Cotu – White

All white is a staple for summer and this classic silhouette is better for those who want something a little more flexible that can be dressed up or down if needed. The Superga 2750s come in leather or canvas variants, but the all white canvas is a better bet for summer just because leather isn’t very breathable and adds a lot of bulk and weight to the shoe. If you want to inject a little bit of colour into your look, then they also come in deep red, blue, and baby blue colourways.

Asics Gel-Lyte V NS

The Asics Gel-Lyte V is a firm favourite for those familiar with old-school running shoes due to its patented Gel technology. Asics developed this back in the 80s and it’s still as efficient as ever, providing a lot of support and cushioning for lifestyle use, but enough for running use as well. While not necessarily as spongy as the Boost technology pioneered by Adidas, it boasts serious comfort not only because of the sole, but also because of the sock-like boot that is used instead of a separate upper and tongue combination. The NS model is a pared down version of the standard Gel-Lyte V and uses a thin fused mesh for the majority of the upper instead of leather or canvas, so it’s a little more summer appropriate than the bulkier standard Vs.

Converse Chuck Taylor All Star II Lycra Low

You’ll be hard-pressed to find sneakers with more old-school street-cred than All Stars – they’ve been around for three times as long as most of its wearers have been alive. The iconic style has been updated and improved recently, and even features Nike’s Lunarlon insole for added comfort, since Nike acquired Converse a while back. This iteration of the Chuck Taylors feature a water repellent lycra upper that’ll keep your feet nice and dry if those random Joburg thunder showers catch you unawares. They’re also in a bright shade of blue to add some colour to your outfit.
