South Africa scoops nine AMAA awards

The 2012 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), which took place on 22 April in Lagos, Nigeria saw South Africa walk away with nine awards including some of the top awards of the evening.

South Africa clinched not only the best film award for How to Steal 2 Million, but also the best film in an African Language award for Khalo Matabane’s State of Violence.

The awards are a further assurance that the ever-evolving South African film industry is on the fast track to competing with the international film industries. AMAA received 328 entries from across Africa, which included 134 feature films, 88 short films, 57 documentaries and six animations. South Africa received 45 nominations.

Other South African winners included: Otelo Burning (achievement in cinematography and best child actor for Tsepang Mohlomi); Man On Ground (best actor in a supporting role for Fana Mokoena); and How To Steal 2 Million (best actress in a supporting role for Terry Pheto. The Special Jury Award went to Akin Omotoso.
