Xperia XZ2

After being a juggernaut in the mobile phone era, Sony unfortunately dropped off a little bit when the jump to smartphones happened. Luckily, with their Xperia line, they’ve been clawing back some ground against the likes of Apple, Samsung, and Huawei in the smartphone stakes.

Their XZ2 flagship is meant to go head to head with the Galaxy S-series, Apple’s iPhone, and the Huawei P-series devices that are currently the segment leaders – so the new XZ2 is going to have to provide some serious value. Thankfully, it appears that it does.

Inside the curved chassis is a Snapdragon 845 processor, with 4GB of RAM and built-in storage of 64GB – so, on all the major performance fronts, it can keep up with its competitors. The screen is a 5.7-inch LCD with Gorilla Glass 5 which keeps up with the Galaxy S9 both in terms of size (the S9 is slightly bigger at 5.8-inches) as well as quality.

Where it really stands out though is the camera, with the 19MP sensor being able to capture video at 30FPS in 2160p, and even has a slow-motion capture function that can take video at 960fps in 1080p.

Barring a few idiosyncrasies, it seems Sony’s attempt to launch a sufficient flagship competitor has succeeded with the XZ2, but since Samsung and Apple seem to such a significant amount of brand loyalty, it might be difficult for Sony to get a word in edgeways. For those looking to go off the beaten path, though, the XZ2 does offer a pretty appealing alternative.

It will be launching in South Africa at a retail price of around R11,999 – and will be available from Vodacom on the uChoose Flexi 165 for R599/pm, on Telkom’s FreeMe 1GB for R549/pm, and on MTN’s Made for Me M also at R599/pm.
