After a comic book movie-filled May, June might be a little bit of a comedown for a lot of people – but there are a couple of blockbusters to enjoy and there is at least one super-powered classic ready to make its comeback to the big screen!

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Release date: 8 June

This 90s legend made a successful comeback with 2015’s Jurassic World and the blockbuster train is going to keep on rolling with yet another dino-sized sequel. This time, after the events of its predecessor, the stakes are even higher for the crew of adventurers as the inhabitants of Jurassic Park are about to be released into the world at large. Chris Pratt’s Owen and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire have to team up again (with a certain raptor buddy) to stop the movie’s villain from auctioning off rare and genetically modified dinosaurs to the highest bidder – an amazingly safe idea, of course. Expect the usual high-octane fare with a lot of action, dinosaur shenanigans and a healthy dose of Jeff Goldblum.

The Incredibles 2

Release date: 15 June

‘Better late than never’ is a popular phrase, but few would have thought that ‘late’ wouldn’t be 14 years after the original Incredibles released. But, one of Pixar’s most well-received titles finally has its sequel, and with the return of the same team, expectations will be high for the follow-up to match or even improve upon the first film. The Parr family returns to action once again, trying to balance the rigours of American suburban life with the responsibility of keeping the world safe from danger – which, in this case is a mole-like super-villain bent on global destruction. Considering the massive anticipation and development for this movie, it’s likely to be an instant hit, pretty much like every movie that Pixar puts out.

Hereditary

Release date: 15 June

Looking for a horror that will leave you psychologically scarred and exceptionally suspicious of any skeletons your family might have in its closet? You’re in luck! If the initial reactions to Hereditary are anything to go by, it could be the horror of the year, and perhaps one of the best commercial horror movies to come out for quite some time. It stars Toni Collette as a parent whose mother passes away, and following the event, her own family begins to discover sinister secrets about their recently deceased grandmother, and a curse that seems destined to claim the family. This definitely isn’t going to be for the faint of heart, but it seems like it’s going to be a more psychologically-based horror than an all-out gore and fright-fest.

Ocean’s Eight

Release date: 22 June

It’s been some time since there’s been an entry into the popular Ocean’s ensemble heist franchise, but a new team is here to take the reins and steal some things in style once again. It features another star-studded line-up, led by Sandra Bullock’s Debbie Ocean, who’s been planning a daring heist for the last few years, and ropes in her BFF Lou (Cate Blanchett) to help her assemble a team to pull it off. The venue: the prestigious and world-famous Met Gala, and the team, along with a whole host of A-list cameos, will have to devise another high-tech and overly intricate plan to snag the prize. As with the previous Ocean’s movies, what seems like a fairly straight forward heist caper always has some kind of twist or turn that will keep viewers on their toes, and that trend is unlikely to disappear with Ocean’s 8.

What is usually considered a silly kid’s game is at the heart of this comedy about five grown-up friends who play a month-long version of the game. Instead of chasing each other around a playground slapping one another’s shoulders, though, they have to chase each other around the continental US, risking jobs and relationships for one of them to be crowned the victor. What makes the movie even more intriguing is that it’s based on a true story that was run by the Wall Street Journal. The film features Ed Helms of The Hangover fame, Rashida Jones, Jeremy Renner (not shooting at aliens with a bow, this time), Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm (still wearing cool suits), and American comedian Hannibal Buress. Quirky comedies are dime a dozen, but this one’s novel approach should mean it has something fresh to offer.
