Lenovo Z5 Revealed, Features Almost Bezel-Less Display
The Lenovo Z5 delivers a notable screen-size and the specs to match.
Ever since touch-screen smartphones gained prominence and keyboards became a distant memory, companies have been trying to maximise their screen-to-body ratio. This refers to how much of the front-facing surface is actually covered by the screen and not the bezels (or borders) at the sides of the screen.
While most smartphones have an decent ratio in the 80-90% range, the goal has now become for smartphones to have an ‘all-screen’ configuration where the bezels, fingerprint sensors, or speaker notches are almost completely removed. Lenovo has been making claims that its new Z5 will deliver on that, and they came quite close during the Z5’s recent launch in Beijing.
While it doesn’t quite deliver on being an ‘all-screen’ phone, since it has a speaker notch up at the top and a small bezel near the bottom, it does have an outstanding body-to-screen ratio of around 95%.
Beyond that, it also has some other eye-catching specs:
- 15MP back camera, 8MP front-facing camera
- 6.2-inch display (2,246 x 1,080 pixels)
- Latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Chipset
- 6GB RAM. 64GB/128GB Storage
- 2-inch Full HD IPS Display
- Android 8.1 Oreo
The two specs most users will care about most are the chipset and the screen size, both of which in the Z5’s case clearly rank it as being a flagship competitor that will try and unseat the best being offered by Samsung and Apple.
Is it going to do that? We’ll have to see, but it’s difficult to deny that the combination of the screen configuration and specs will make it a very viable option for a lot of people.
We’re still waiting on pricing and availability for South Africa – but could you see yourself swapping an iPhone X or Galaxy S9 for this?
