Top 5 Superhero Movies to Look Forward to in 2019

Even though 2018 has already had a couple of blockbuster hits, the superhero movie train is showing no signs of slowing down! There are a total of nine that are lined up to blast onto silver screens next year (that we know of); so, we’re going to take a look at the bigger projects you can look forward to!

Hellboy

Release date: 12 April 2019

Fans of darker graphic novels might be familiar with Dark Horse’s Hellboy series, and have likely seen the two previous film, Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). Although Guillermo Del Toro did an amazing job crafting the Hellboy world, the planned third movie never came to fruition and a complete reboot is on the cards. David Harbour of Stranger Things fame takes on the role of Hellboy in the new venture, and so far he looks the part. As usual, Hellboy and his team will be tangling with all manner of evil beings, this time headed up by a sorceress known as the ‘Blood Queen’ – played by Milla Jovovich. If you prefer your heroes with a little edge and an unhealthy addiction to cigars, this is one to keep an eye out for.

Shazam

Release date: 5 April 2019

Turning into a superhero and defeating evildoers is every kid’s dream, and Billy Batson is a kid that actually gets to live out that fantasy. Think of this movie as the superhero version of Tom Hanks’ Big from 1988 – a kid trapped in an adult’s body. Only this time, the adult is a mythical embodiment of lightning and thunder that has to prevent world-destroying forces from achieving their evil schemes. DC’s film projects have been accurately criticised for veering too far into dark and serious tones for their live-action, so Shazam’s far lighter and more comedic tone should serve as a good course-correction for the studio. There isn’t going to be much angst and brooding here, just a kid with incredible super powers trying to figure out how to be the best hero he can be with his foster brother. Avengers: Endgame

Release date: 26 April 2019

Avengers: Infinity War was 2018’s superhero epic, and it completely shattered expectations with its scale and plot. We’re going to avoid any spoilers for those who haven’t seen IW – but the fourth Avengers film will continue right where IW left off. For those who have seen it already, you’ll know the movie ended with a pretty cataclysmic event that will need to be solved by Earth’s mightiest heroes. The way that they traverse this particular mystery hasn’t been fully revealed, but fan theories and speculation have been rife ever since Infinity War was released. It’s fair to say, considering the events of its predecessor, Avengers 4 has every opportunity to top its prequel, and then some. If you’re invested in the fates of your favourite Avengers, you won’t be able to miss this one.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Release date: 5 July 2019

Marvel successfully rebooted the Spider-Man franchise with 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, and they’re wasting no time throwing Tom Holland’s Peter Parker into a brand-new adventure with his high school friends. Just for clarity – Far From Home will take place after the next Avengers film, so events from Avengers 4 may have a bearing on the plot and characters present. The premise is that Peter and his friends go on a relaxing (supposedly) vacation to Europe, but as usual, things don’t go according to plan as a man named Quentin Beck (aka Mysterio) – played by Jake Gyllenhaal – begins pulling off some serious crimes. It’s unclear which abilities Mysterio will have in this universe and whether or not they’re supernatural, but traditionally, he’s a master of illusion and uses theatrics and hypnotism to pull off his crimes – and it’ll be up to Spider-Man to stop him. It’s likely that a few other villains will make appearances, too, with Vulture from Homecoming already confirmed to return – but we’ll have to wait and see who else the wall-crawler will have to face off against.

Wonder Woman 1984

Release date: November 2019

The one redeeming aspect of DC’s film universe so far is the breakout success enjoyed by 2017’s Wonder Woman. In it she faced off against Ares, the god of war, in trenches of the First World War as the backdrop. Fast-forward a few decades and Diana Prince finds herself in the 80s, where her next big foe will confront her. The incorporation of magical and mythical entities continues, with Wonder Woman’s nemesis Cheetah planned to be the primary antagonist. Intergalactic aliens and Greek Gods are one thing, but what about a British archeologist who stumbles upon an ancient civilisation and is imbued with the abilities of the entity they worship? We don’t know much about the story yet, but who doesn’t want to see Wonder Woman fight an anthropomorphic Cheetah-human hybrid?
