Samsung’s been at successfully duking it out with Apple over who should will be king of the smartwatch hill, and their next contender, now confirmed to be named the Galaxy Watch is going to be ready for consumers to get their hands on at the end of August in the US, but probably closer to October for most other markets.

Many thought it would be a direct successor to the Samsung Gear 3, but it looks like they’ve gone for a bit of a rebrand and left the ‘Gear’ moniker behind for this release.

Here’s a breakdown of the main specifications:

  • Available in two versions: 42mm and 46mm
  • Waterproof up to 5m
  • 1.2/1.3-inch circular AMOLED screen
  • Corning Gorilla DX+ screen
  • LTE versions for both sizes.
  • 270mAh/ 472mAh Battery sizes for 42mm/46mm respectively
  • Exynos 9110 Dual Core Chipset
  • LTE editions include 1.5GB RAM + 4GB internal memory; Bluetooth versions feature 768MB RAM + 4GB internal memory.

The improved battery life will be a big draw for many users, with Samsung claiming that you’ll be able to use the watch for 7 days without needing to recharge. While this is impressive, they didn’t specify what kind of usage they drew this data from, so it’ll remain to be seen how it performs across a variety of usage patterns.

Fitness fanatics will also be happy to hear that it comes with more health-related functionality now, too. It can monitor your heart rate and will recommend that you take a breather if you seem to be getting a little stressed. It will also monitor your sleeping cycle with sleep-tracking info, but they haven’t mentioned how exactly it differs in function or information from a similar utility available on the Gear Fit 2 Pro.

They also have yet to release the exact changes made to the software, but it appears to have Tizen’s software and OS – not Google’s Wear OS software as it was previously rumoured.

The pricing tentatively seems to be listed at $279/$329 (R4,000/R4,732) for the 42mm/46mm respectively, but we’ll have to wait and see how that translates to local pricing. Keep an eye out for updates as more information about this watch is released over the coming weeks.

5Gb of ram? Thats more than the s9 phone. I think you mean 768Mb for the non lte and 1.5Gb for the LTE models

@sbtrue , the hydraulics for the top mechanism is certainly German. The rams are still available from Mercedes but the price is over a grand each. No worries though, there is a company in Oregon called Too Hydraulics. They rebuild the rams for about $65 plus shipping. I have already replaced 4 in my low mile 1990. Some as in my case are deep in the side panels. Not hard but be prepared for lots of cuts in you fingers and arms.
