5 Biggest Movies of September 2018

September brings with it a serious mix of horror, action, suspense, and comedy; with a wide-variety of films on the horizon this month. We’ve highlighted 5 of the most exciting that we cannot wait to please our peepers with.

Mile 22

Every now and then, Mark Wahlberg tries something new out like Ted or The Happening, but he generally always makes a return to action movies after a while. It’s clearly where he feels comfortable, and his latest project sees him reunite with director Peter Berg for the fourth time (Lone Survivor, Patriot’s Day, Deep Water Horizon). Wahlberg’s character leads an elite tactical unit who are tasked with getting a high priority asset out of the country – and they’ve got 22 miles between them and the extraction point. Their only problem is they’re being chased by terrorists that want to ensure their ‘package’ doesn’t get the opportunity to reveal the sensitive information he’s using as a bargaining chip to secure his safety. Expect a high bodycount, vintage Mark Wahlberg ass-kicking and a whole bunch of one-liners.

The Nun

James Wan’s The Conjuring series of supernatural horror films seems to be the horror franchise you can count on to provide you with an annual dose of scares and sleepless nights. The Nun is a spinoff prequel to The Conjuring 2 and will chronologically be considered the first film in the universe’s timeline – effectively an origin story for the dark force that has been present throughout the franchise. It is set in Romania in 1952 and follows a priest and a novice nun who are sent to the Carta Monastery to investigate a mysterious suicide of a nun residing there. Considering the events of prior movies, it’s not difficult to figure out what they find, but the journey is no doubt going to be a harrowing one nonetheless!

BlacKkKlansman

Often truth is stranger than fiction, as is the case in this team-up directed by Spike Lee and produced by Jordan Peele. It’s based on a true story occurring in the 1970s, where the first African American detective in Colorado Springs, Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), is determined to kick his tenure off with a bang: by setting his sights on the KKK. He sets up an undercover investigation and enlists the help of veteran colleague Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) and together the pair team up to take down the hate group who is trying to sanitise their detestable rhetoric so that they can appeal to the mainstream. Although the subject matter is serious and intense, there’s a lot of comedy due to the chemistry between the two leads, but also due to the outlandish nature of their investigation. It really has to be seen to be believed.

The Predator

Release date: 14 September 2018

The retro hits that are getting some 21st century love keep on coming – this time it’s the action-packed Predator franchise getting its newest entry. Unfortunately there’s no Arnold Schwarzenegger in this one, but Shane Black (who actually starred in the original Predator) is in the director’s chair, so there is some involvement from people who are keenly familiar with what made the franchise successful in the first place. The plot revolves around a young boy that accidentally triggers an alert that brings the Predators back to earth. In the period between now and the last time humanity faced off against them, they’ve enhanced their abilities with the help of genes from other species, and it’s up to a team of soldiers to put them in their place, again. Don’t expect anything too deep, but it should hopefully prove to be an adrenalin-fuelled rollercoaster. 

Johnny English Strikes Again

Rowan Atkinson hasn’t been as prolific as he once was when it comes to his film appearances, but any fans of his previous outings as British super-spy Johnny English will be happy to see him reprise the part again this year. Of course, ‘super spy’ is a slight exaggeration, as fans of the first will undoubtedly know. He’s no 007; so instead of intriguing and mysterious plotlines, we get a comedic caper of a spy movie not unlike the Naked Gun films from years gone by. He’s joined by his trusted assistant Angus, as the pair are the last remaining agents whose identities haven’t been revealed after a cyber attack outs all the other operatives in Britain. If you need your funny-bone tickled this month, this is the movie to see.
