Jantjies commits to Lions for Super Rugby
Talented playmaker decideds to stay in Johannesburg where he finds “success”.
It’s been confirmed that young flyhalf Elton Jantjies has signed a two-year contract to play Super Rugby with the Lions in the coming seasons.
“He has committed to a two year contract amid a lot of speculation surrounding his future,” said Jantjies’ agent James Adams to Eyewitness News Sport.
“He felt he needed to give something back to the Lions after many years of service.”
Jantjies played for the Stormers on loan during the 2013 Super Rugby campaign, with speculation that he will make his stay permanent at the Cape Town-based franchise.
“He thoroughly enjoyed his time with the Stormers, but I think it was a pretty easy decision at the end of the day.
“Most of his success came while playing for the Lions. He made a calculated decision also to be closer to his family in Pretoria.”
Speedy outside back Lionel Mapoe will also return to the Lions from the Bulls, while lock Franco van der Merwe will also lend his talents back to the Johannesburg club.
“Franco and Lionel have both committed to two year contracts,” added Adams.

Great news for the Lions that all their top quality players are returning. It’s good to see that Jantjies has faith in the club that has has such trust in him. In recent times he’s shown sparks of brilliance but has taken a huge knock in the confidence department over the last two years.
I think he needs to play with young, exciting players who will back his runs and little chip kicks. When he was benching at the Stormers you could see the team he was playing with didn’t have confidence in him and as a player that must drain your self belief. Also when he was called up to the Bok squad there was a huge question mark next to his name in many peoples minds. Then was brought on late in a series, that South Africa was struggling in, and was expected to shine under pressure. Which I think is hugely unfair! It seems like only a few (non-Blue Bulls) supporters will stand up and say that Morne Steyne plays terribly under pressure, so my question is why let Steyn play in our “low pressure” games and instead start Jantjies and Lambie?
Also, don’t get me wrong, i’m not saying Jantjies is god’s gift to South African rugby. He does need to work on his handling errors and at times his kicking is shaky, but he has the ability bring a different style of play to the South African game.
I think the Lions have a tough job ahead of them but need to focus on sitting mid-table in Super 15. Will Jantjies be the answer for them?
