August brings with it some exciting new titles to mix up the big-name sequels and triple-A blockbusters already dominating the 2019 best-sellers list. Check out our picks for the most exciting games coming in August 2019:

Control

Release date: 27 August 2019 (Xbox One | PS4 | PC) Pre-order Control here.

Control comes from Remedy, the team behind such hits as Max Payne and the shamefully-underrated Quantum Break, and it looks to be one of the most interesting games of the year. This supernatural third-person action-adventure game will challenge you to master a combination of supernatural abilities, modifiable loadouts and reactive environments, while fighting through a deep and unpredictable world.

Remnant: From the Ashes

Release date: 20 August 2019 (PC) Pre-order Remnant: From the Ashes here.

Developed by the team behind last year’s underrated Darksiders 3, Remnant: From the Ashes is a third-person survival action shooter set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by monstrous creatures. As one of the last remnants of humanity, you’ll set out alone or alongside up to two other players to face down hordes of deadly enemies and epic bosses, and try to carve a foothold, rebuild, and then retake what was lost. The game also features dynamic generation of assets, which means the worlds and dungeons will change each time you play through them, creating new maps, enemy encounters, quest opportunities, and in-world events.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

Release date: 27 August 2019 (PC) Pre-order Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey here.

Developed by one of the core creators behind the Assassin’s Creed series, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a unique take on the survival-adventure genre, allowing you take control of an ape in the early days of human evolution. Players will have to advance their knowledge, expand your clan, learn new skills, and explore the diverse environments, all while avoiding dangerous predators and fending off hostile enemies.

Astral Chain

Release date: 27 August 2019 (PC) Pre-order Astral Chain here.

The next release from Platinum Games, the developers behind Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and Nier: Automata, is an interesting looking title where players take on the role of police officers in the far-future. Crazy combat, mechs, and insane enemies (the things people have come to expect from Platinum Games’ projects) are all there, and it looks to be a blast to play. This one is a Nintendo Switch exclusive too, so great to see Nintendo’s portable console getting some more love this month.

The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan

Release date: 30 August 2019 (Xbox One | PS4 | PC) Pre-order The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan here.

If you played Supermassive Games’ brilliant Until Dawn, you’ll know what to expect here. Man of Medan is the first part of an anthology of interactive narrative-driven horror games. The games are extremely cinematic, giving you limited control in certain instances, but the real crux of the gameplay comes from the tons of branching storylines, conversation options, and do-or-die decisions you’ll have to make in high-tension situations. Man of Medan even includes co-op for the first time, so you’ll have to work together in order to survive… or throw one another under the bus in order to up your chances of getting out alive.

Blair Witch

Release date: 30 August 2019 (Xbox One | PC) Pre-order Blair Witch here.

It may have been 20 years since the first movie, but Blair Witch is getting another game this month. This time around, it takes the form of a first-person physiological horror, throwing you into the shoes of Ellis, a former police officer with a troubled past, who is searching for a missing boy in the infamous Black Hills Forest. You’ll have to keep your wits about you as you come face-to-face with your fears and the mysterious Blair Witch which haunts the woods.
