The offroad motorsport genre is one of those gaming corners which, despite its niche appeal, has a lot of variety and competition, which is good, as it pushes developers to innovate year-on-year. Monster Energy Supercross 4 might not be the crème de la crème of supercross games, but it does deliver one of the most satisfying, mud-packed experiences you’ll find on consoles and PC.

Being the official game of the discipline, Supercross 4 delivers bombastic races around sharp tracks packed with huge jumps and tricky mounds, and that’s not to mention bumping and fending your way through 22 other riders. In terms of a direct representation of the sport, Supercross 4 does well to capture the atmosphere, intensity, and frenetic action of the real-life thing.

While there are only so many things you can improve on every year, Supercross 4 does feel and look a lot better than its predecessor. Physics are more dynamic, your rider carries more weight, and your collisions with the opposition feel more realistic; and the visuals have been given a bit of a spiffy polish too, especially seeing them running at 60FPS on the Xbox Series X/S and PS5.

While the single-player career mode may not be on par with something like MotoGP 21 or Ride 4, it does give you an interesting and true-to-life progression through the Supercross ranks, where you’re able to move from tier to tier (with the Futures feeder league included) and upgrade your rider through an RPG-like skill-tree progression system, which is quite a fresh take for the sports genre.

Supercross 4 does feature a whole lot more riders, official season tracks, and the series’ enjoyable track editor (which has been given some new elements too), so there is a lot to keep you busy. Due to its difficulty curve, the game might not be for everyone, but if you’re really interested in the sport, this is a good place to start; and for longtime fans, there are enough new additions here to warrant signing up for the new season.
