While the movie industry has been shifting and changing to cope with the challenges brought about by the global COVID-19 pandemic, April is gearing up to be one of the biggest movie release periods in months. From bloody hand-to-hand combat to espionage shenanigans, here are the movies to catch this April:

Mortal Kombat

Release date: 9 April 2021

The original 1995 Mortal Kombat movie is a seriously underrated piece of Hollywood cinema, as far as video game adaptations go, but no one can deny that it’s about time for a newer, more gorier take on the franchise that stays true to its bloody origins. Well, director Simon McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat reboot is releasing this month, giving us a darker tone, brutal violence, and the beloved characters we’ve been dying to see. The plot revolves around the Mortal Kombat tournament (duh), but focuses on a new hero, Cole, who has to fight alongside and against the likes of Sonya Blade, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Jax, Kano, Raiden, and more classic characters.

Voyagers

Release date: 16 April 2021

Starring Ready Player One’s Tye Sheridan, Voyagers follows a group of young men and women, bred for intelligence and obedience, who embark on an expedition to colonise a distant planet. But, when the group uncovers a disturbing secret about the mission, they defy their training and begin to explore their most primitive natures. Voyagers also stars Colin Farrell and Lily-Rose Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp.

Vanquish

Release date: 23 April 2021

Ruby Rose stars in this John Wick-esque thriller about a mother, Victoria, who is trying to put her dark past as a Russian drug courier behind her, but retired cop Damon (played by Morgan Freeman) forces her to do his bidding by holding her daughter hostage. Victoria must use guns, guts, and a bike to take out a series of violent gangsters — or she may never see her child again.

Wrath of Man

Release date: 30 April 2021

Jason Statham and director Guy Ritchie have once-again teamed up for another crime-thriller, this time following a cash-in-transit driver in Wrath of Man. The film is actually based on the 2004 French film Cash Truck by Nicolas Boukhrief, and tells the story of a man who joins a cash-in-transit security company in order to find the killer of his son, who died in such a heist.

The Courier

Release date: 30 April 2021

Benedict Cumberbatch heads up this interesting historical thriller, which follows unassuming British businessman Greville Wynne, who is recruited into one of the greatest international conflicts in history, going undercover for the CIA. His job is to get close to Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky in an effort to provide crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear confrontation and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis. If you’re looking for tension this month, The Courier should deliver.
