The gaming release schedule has been in full swing since 2022 started, and while things slow down a little bit throughout April, there are some noteworthy titles to keep you eye on!

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Release date: 5 April 2022 (PS5 | Xbox Series X/S | PS4 | Xbox One | Switch | PC)

While it seems like there’s a Lego Star Wars game coming out every odd month, this title is the big one – it’s the creme-de-la-creme of the Lego Star Wars franchise, combining the entire Skywalker saga story, and reinventing the gameplay with new combat mechanics, an over-the-shoulder shooting system, and a whole lot of new tricks. Even if you’ve played previous Lego Star Wars games and are overly familiar with the Star Wars story at this point, this should be a hilarious and enjoyably blocky retelling of the iconic story and scenarios.

The House of the Dead Remake

Release date: 7 April 2022 (Switch)

House of the Dead is as iconic as arcades themselves, and a remake of the Sega light gun original is hitting Nintendo’s Switch this April. The remake features revamped visuals, tighter motion controls thanks to the use of the Switch’s JoyCons, and multiple endings. Of course, it’ll stay true to its on-rails design and should be a fun addition to the Switch’s shooter catalogue.

MLB: The Show 22

Release date: 5 April 2022 (PS5 | Xbox Series X/S | PS4 | Xbox One | PC)

Baseball might be a somewhat obscure and niche sport for South Africans to love, but the quality of the MLB: The Show releases can’t be disputed. Players can look forward to the ability to create and use multiple Ballplayers, and customise their players and tweak their attributes in an RPG-style progression system to aid their rise to the top. The Diamond Dynasty fantasy card game is back too, and there’s a new Mini Seasons mode, where each season brings new challenges as you face off against a new set of competition.

Chernobylite

Release date: 21 April 2022 (PS5 | Xbox Series X/S | Already on: PS4 | Xbox One | PC)

While a tragedic incident in history, the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster makes for an interesting setting for any game, and Chernobylite takes a horror-FPS spin that fans of Stalker and Metro fans should look out for. The player plays as a physicist, formerly employed at Chernobyl Nuclear Plant who is suffering from the loss of their loved one in the Chernobyl Disaster 30 years ago and returns to the disaster zone to look for their partner. Most of the single-player gameplay revolves around exploring the exclusion zone, gathering supplies and tools while encountering ‘Stalkers’ and hostile military personnel. The player is also forced to make decisions that affect the nonlinear storyline. There is also a crafting system, which allows the player to craft their own equipment and weapons.

Nintendo Switch Sports

Release date: 29 April 2022 (Switch)

Wii Sports changed the course of the Wii when it launches alongside the console, and even though the Switch has been out for a few years now, it’s finally getting its long-awaited sport compilation, Nintendo Switch Sports. The game features three sports from previous instalments (tennis, bowling, and swordplay; known as chambara within the game), and three new sports (soccer, volleyball, and badminton). Another sport from a previous instalment, golf, was announced as well, but this will be issued via an update at a later stage.
