Sporting moments this weekend

While the Premier League takes a brief break this week, South African audiences will be treated to some epic international and local rugby encounters, with the Springboks resuming their Rugby Championship campaign, and the Currie Cup teams now settling comfortably into the competition. The US Open also heads into the business-end with some colossal matches this weekend.

Springboks vs Wallabies
Saturday, 12:05

The obvious highlight of the weekend is the Springboks vs Wallabies game, which will be played on Saturday morning. The Springboks have run in a few changes to their side, opting to start with Morne Steyn, Adriaan Strauss and Jan Serfontein, with uncapped newcomer Warren Whiteley also getting a spot on the bench.

The Wallabies have switched up their playmaking duo, and Bernard Foley and Nick Phipps replacing Kurtley Beale and Nic White, respectively, who now both move to the bench.

This encounter should be a cracker, and the Boks should have the strength in their loose trio to take it home.

Blue Bulls vs Golden Lions
Saturday, 19:10

The Golden Lions make their way up north to Pretoria to tackle the Bulls, who had a shaky start to the competition but are improving as each week goes by.  The Loftus faithfuls will definitely be hostile and want some redemption after the Bulls were handed a heavy defeat from the Lions in the opening round.

Federer vs Cilic
Saturday

Roger Federer’s dream of a potential US Open final clash with world No.1 Novak Djokovic faces a stiff test on Saturday from Marin Cilic, the Croat who sees a first grand slam title as a perfect way to repair his reputation.

Federer’s dramatic 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 win over France’s Gael Monfils on Thursday puts some momentum behind the 17-time major champion, while Cilic will be eager to prove his worth after overcoming Czech Tomas Berdych 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to reach his first US Open semi-final.
