Check out the most-anticipated video game releases of September 2022!
From swashbuckling adventures to harrowing horror, the gaming releases for September 2022 are diverse enough that anyone will find something they’re itching to play. We’ve rounded up 7 of the most-anticipated releases arriving in September:
The Last of Us Part 1
Release date: 2 September 2022 (PS5)
The Last of Us has become somewhat of a must-play experience for anyone owning a Playstation or PC, but now the 2013 survival adventure has seen a remake in the form of The Last of Us Part 1, leveraging the technology and gameplay improvements seen in its 2020 sequel, The Last of Us Part 2. Running on the improved engine, the game’s visuals, facial animations, and details have been noticeably improved, and there are also new additions to the gameplay, controls, performance, and accessibility options, along with 3D audio and the haptic feedback implementation on PS5.
NBA 2K23
Release date: 9 September 2022 (Xbox Series X/S | PS5 | Xbox One | PS4 | PC | Switch)
NBA 2K23 aims to deliver the biggest and most polished basketball sim to date, with all the rough edges from previous entries smoothened out and some new features added to heighten the already-great experience even further. New offensive skill-based moves, defensive options, and animations flesh out the gameplay, while the beloved Jordan Challenges allow you to step back in time with era-specific visuals that captured Michael Jordan’s ascent from collegiate sensation to global icon with immersive moments chronicling his career-defining dominance.
Return to Monkey Island
Release date: 19 September 2022 (PC | Switch)
Return to Monkey Island is an unexpected, thrilling return of series creator Ron Gilbert that continues the story of the legendary adventure games The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. Bringing classic point-and-click gameplay to the modern-day, intrepid pirates will solve puzzles and explore the islands with a clever evolution of classic adventure game controls. Context-sensitive interactions, reactive dialogue trees, and an easy-to-use inventory system make pirating a breeze.
Session
Release date: 22 September 2022 (Xbox Series X/S | PS5 | Xbox One | PS4 | PC)
Fans of skateboarding and video games will unanimously agree that Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 and Skate 3 were the pinnacles of skating games. However, the THPS series has lost its lustre and Skate 4 still seems a way away. Thankfully, a new skating sim, Session, should fill the void. While Session takes cues from the likes of Skate, it has it’s own identity. The developers explain that they don’t want players to worry about how many points their tricks are worth, but rather the goal of mastering tricks and the dynamic controls. That idea extends to the camera system too, as it’s inspired by the late 90’s skate movies, giving the player a new and more dynamic perspective on their tricks and the opportunity to work on their very own in-game movie.
Serial Cleaners
Release date: 22 September 2022 (Xbox Series X/S | PS5 | Xbox One | PS4 | PC)
While relatively macabre, Serial Cleaners is a hilariously dark and interesting concept. The game is a top-down stealth-action game, where you get to experience being a murder scene cleaner for the mob in 1990s New York. You’ll have to tidy up bodies, clean bloodstains, and manoeuvre your way around levels, often while the police are on the scene. Think Hitman without the fancy suit and training.
Alfred Hitchcock – Vertigo
Release date: 27 September 2022 (Xbox Series X/S | PS5 | Xbox One | PS4 | Already on PC)
Fans of Alfred Hitchcock’s work will have to keep an eye on this one. Vertigo is a third-person story-driven adventure game that is loosely based on the films of Alfred Hitchcock, particularly Vertigo. The story will follow a man named Ed Miller, who enters therapy to cope with the mysterious after-effects of a car crash. Throughout the game, you’ll play as a few different characters as you play through scenarios to rebuild the memories of the characters involved. It looks a little slower-paced, but that’s a good thing, as there aren’t enough narrative-focused experiences on the market currently; and the Hitchcockian horror element is always an alluring setting.
FIFA 23
Release date: 30 September 2022 (Xbox Series X/S | PS5 | Xbox One | PS4 | PC | Switch)
Well, we’re finally here. The last official FIFA game is upon us, as FIFA 23 will be the final game in the partnership between FIFA and EA (with future games set to be titled EA Sports FC). In this entry, the game has benefited from some additional tinkering and tweaks, and the title also features the FIFA World Cup 2023 game mode, while also including the Women’s World Cup for the first time.
