After some back and forth with the franchise in recent years, 2K Sports’ defacto golf sim is back with PGA Tour 2K23, aiming to be the biggest and best entry to date. We’ve rounded up what you need to know about the latest entry, so that you can get your virtual 18-hole adventure off on a good foot.

Release date & platforms

PGA Tour 2K23 will launch on 14 October 2022, and comes in a few editions: Standard, Deluxe, and the Tiger Woods Edition. The Standard is obviously the base game, while the Deluxe Edition comes with a bunch of in-game items and Michael Jordan (yes, that Michael Jordan) as a playable character. The Tiger Woods Edition includes everything that the Deluxe Edition does, along with the Tiger Woods Pack which features a host of extra in-game TW items.

The pricing of PGA Tour 2K23 is the following:

  • PGA Tour 2K23 (PS4) – R999
  • PGA Tour 2K23 (PS5) – R1,049
  • PGA Tour 2K23 (Xbox Series X/S | Xbox One) – R1,049

Cover star

Of course, the big news of this year’s edition is that Tiger Woods is back on the cover. After a few entries where Rory McIlroy took centre stage, and no game last season, the franchise is back with the original face of the series. However, Woods has not only made himself available as the cover star, but has also consulted and is even credited as being executive producer on the game, lending his wealth of knowledge to the development process of PGA Tour 2K23.

Gameplay changes

With two years of development, PGA Tour 2K23 has had some big upgrades. Firstly, the normal analogue stick swing system is still present, but has been enhanced dramatically, whereby timing, speed, and direction plays much more of a role. If you prefer a different control scheme, the new 3-Click swing system allows you to utilise the face buttons and coordinate your timing using various metres to hit the perfect shot. At any time, you can change the difficulty settings, but it will tweak the swing speed of the meter — unlike the Analog Stick system. You can experiment with the Analog Stick and 3-Click swings to find the best layout for your style of play.

In past games, you’d only be able to compete against the pros, but for the first time in the PGA Tour 2K franchise you can take control of golf’s biggest names, including the likes of Woods, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Lexi Thompson and more. As for courses, you’ll find 20 licensed courses in-game at launch, including new additions Wilmington Country Club, The Renaissance Club, St. George’s Golf and Country Club, and more.

Furthermore, if you don’t want to play as one of the established stars, you can create your own player in the MyPlayer suite. 2K Sports emphasised that personalisation is paramount this year, and has given players all the tools they need to create their own future star from the ground up. Appearance-wise, tou can replicate your likeness, create a new identity using a series of presets, or go off script and mould your MyPlayer from scratch, and then evolve their skills and abilities, whether you want to turn your golfer into a powerhouse or more consistent rhythm player.

New Modes

PGA Tour 2K23‘s MyCareer mode has been bolstered significantly, allowing you to play as a member of the Korn Ferry Tour and work your way up to the big leagues in the PGA Tour.

The Course Designer, which did appear in 2K21, has been given a huge makeover and allows players to use a deep toolbox of objects and features to build full 18-hole courses packed with hazardous swamps, forest areas, crocodiles, or anything else you desire. You can then share your creations or play other user courses, giving you an endless amount of challenges to pursue.

Obviously, there are a lot of real-life courses in the game: 20 to be exact! You can check out the full list of courses in PGA Tour 2K23 here.

To round off the expanded content line-up is the new multiplayer mode, Topgolf, which joins the normal Match Play and traditional Stroke modes. In Topgolf, you can compete to hit certain targets which a wealth of modifiers, making it a quick and easy game to play with family and friends who don’t have time to tackle a full 9 or 18-hole course.
