It’s about that time of year again — the temperature is rising and we’re all hitting the beaches and sipping cocktails poolside. But, let’s face it, even when we’re not headed for the beach, some summer days are simply too hot to be waltzing around in socks and shoes and we’ve got to reach for the flip-flops.

Forget slides, dad sandals, and even Crocs, the humble flip-flop is red hot on the fashion front this summer.  The thonged sandal — which dates back to at least 4000BC — is, of course, a regular sight from beach to city street every summer. But, this summer the flip-flop is really getting its time in the spotlight.

If you’re in the market for a new pair of flip-flops, the proudly South African brand Plakkie is making traditional flip-flops look even more stylish this summer. The range features flip-flops in all sorts of fun colour combinations, with a few options infused with local flair.

Not only are these locally-made flip flops ultra stylish and comfortable, but we’ve found them to be a lot more durable than their overseas competitors too. While many South Africans complain about the fragility of a certain Brazilian brand’s flip-flop straps, we can say from experience that Plakkies are South African tough.

Plakkies are priced at R280 per pair — which is pretty competitive, considering that flip-flops from other brands have become unusually pricy as of late.
