The year that is 2014 is coming to end, and while we’ve been treated to some epic big-screen moments over the past 12 months, there’s some exciting things happening in cinemas next year.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens
December 2015

We never thought we’d see it, but Star Wars is returning. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams, features a cast including actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Andersen, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. They will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker.  The film is being produced by Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk, and John Williams returns as the composer.

Avengers: Age of Ultron
May 2015

Arguably the most-anticipated film of the year belongs to the Avengers: Age of Ultron. Marvel’s The sequel stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction.

Mad Max: Fury Road
May 2015

Mad Max: Fury Road is directed, produced and co-written by George Miller, and the fourth film of Miller’s Mad Max franchise. The first film of the franchise in 30 years, Fury Road features actor Tom Hardy as Mad Max,  who is also joined by Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Believe it or not, you’re about to be Taken for a third time. Dammit, Liam… keep it together, man! Trust us – Taken 3 will be packed full of Liam Neeson looking broody, punching dudes in the face, bones breaking, and some not-so-subtle car chases – and we’re sold.

Furious 7
April 2015

The seventh instalment in the Fast and the Furious franchise saw a halt in production following the tragic passing of Paul Walker, but things seem to be back on track with the vehicular action franchise. The film takes place after Fast & Furious 6. After defeating Owen Shaw and his crew, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and the rest of the crew are able to return to the United States and live the normal life again as they had wanted, but Owen’s older brother, Ian Shaw (Jason Statham), is after Dominic, seeking revenge for the death of his brother, putting the entire crew in danger once more.

The Fantastic Four
August 2015

The upcoming reboot of the superhero foursome extravaganza, Fantastic Four, has been kept quiet since production started, but now we finally have an official synopsis of the forthcoming reiteration… but it doesn’t add much new information. “The Fantastic Four, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways.”

Spectre
November 2015

The new that Christoph Waltz will be joining the already-impressive cast of the next James Bond move gives us a lot of faith in what’s to come. We don’t know much, but Spectre, which is an acronym for Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion,will likely see a throwback to the old school 007 territory on behalf of Bond production, as Spectre was an evil global terrorist organisation first introduced by Ian Fleming in the 1961 novel Thunderball.

Jurassic World
June 2015

Chris Pratt stars in the fourth instalment in the beloved Jurassic Park franchise, and Parks and Recreation star should breathe some new life into the prehistoric romp. This time around, the park is bigger, more dangerous, and there’s some hybrid dinos hanging around, so expect some pretty hair-raising moments when Jurassic World drops next year.

Ant-Man
July 2015

The Ant-Man film has had a pretty bumpy ride through Hollywood since development on the project began, but Marvel’s next superhero origin story is finally hitting its stride, with Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly joining the cast.  Peyton Reed recently replaced Edgar Wright as the director, which seemed to be the last missing piece of the puzzle when Wright bailed out at late stages of script-writing. Reed has less than a year to get the movie ready before its release in 2015.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2
November 2015

OK, so we all knew Mockingjay Part 1 would be the appetiser for the main-course, which will be the second and final part of the Hunger Games franchise. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Robert Knepper, Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman in his final appearance, and Donald Sutherland.

July 2015

If we had to pick one surefire animated movie for next year, it’s going to be Universal’s Despicable Me spin-off movie that focuses on the adorable silly yellow minions. Yes, we all love the minions, and we’re pretty sure it’s going to be hilarious, ridiculous, and downright amazing.

American Sniper
January 2015

Clint Eastwood’s latest film, American Sniper, follows the true story of U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (played by Bradley Cooper) and it looks like its got all the drama, action, and emotional gravity that we’d expect from a factual war film.

Terminator: Genisys
July 2015

The fourth Terminator film starring Christian Bale was supposed to kick off a new franchise in 2009. Paramount hopes to do it again next year with Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), and Matt Smith (Doctor Who).  Although Schwarzenegger’s return to the “Terminator” franchise and the storyline of the original 1984 James Cameron film should help unite original fans with a new, younger generation.

San Andreas
May 2015

Here’s one of the smattering of next year’s summer blockbusters that’s not a sequel, reboot, or based on a comic book. You may not believe it, but such things do exist.  It’s a big budget disaster movie here by the name of San Andreas, and stars Dwayne Johnson, Paul Giamatti, Iaon Gruffudd, Kylie Minogue (yip, the singing Aussie who also appeared in Street Fighter movie), Ken Watanabe and Colton Hayes. And basically, it looks like an effects-driven extravaganza, with Johnson playing a rescue helicopter pilot dealing with the aftermath of a massive earthquake.
