5 Movies You Can Watch This Weekend

We’re hitting the mid-point of the month, and there’s a lot of choice on offer with some big releases launching this Friday, 13 March, so here’s your handy guide on what you should be watching:

Chappie

Friday, 13 March

South African director Neill Blomkamp’s third full length movie, Chappie, arrives in theatres this week, and stars the likes of Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, Sigourney Weaver and the voice talents of Sharlto Copley.

Set in the near future, the movie follows a police robot named Chappie who is stolen and reprogrammed by some criminals. Chappie then becomes becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself.

Focus

Friday, 13 March

Will Smith makes a long-awaited return to the big screen as an elusive conman in Focus, alongside the Wolf of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie.

Nicky Spurgeon (Smith) takes a young woman named Jess Barrett (Robbie) under his wing and becomes romantically involved with her. But when she gets too close, he abruptly breaks up with her. Three years later, Jess, now an accomplished con artist herself, shows up in Buenos Aires posing as a billionaire international race car owner and throws a loop into Nicky’s latest, very dangerous scheme.

The Gambler

Friday, 13 March

Mark Wahlberg has already received some praise for his performance in the Gamber when it released overseas, and now we get the chance to see it this month.

The film follows literary professor and gambler Jim Bennett, played by Wahlberg, who’s debt causes him to borrow money from his mother and a loan shark. Further complicating his situation is his relationship with one of his students. Will Bennett risk his life for a second chance?

The Cobbler

Friday, 13 March

Adam Sandler’s latest film The Cobbler gives the long-time comedian something a little more serious to sink his teeth into, but will it pay off?

The movie is centred around Max Simkin (Sandler) repairs shoes in the same New York shop that has been in his family for generations. Disenchanted with the grind of daily life, Max stumbles upon a magical heirloom that allows him to step into the lives of his customers and see the world in a new way. Sometimes walking in another man’s shoes is the only way one can discover who they really are.

Strange Magic

13 March

George Lucas has ventured off from his Star Wars legacy and is now attempting to create something a little different, and one of his first films he’s associated with is Strange Magic.

A madcap fairy tale musical inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Popular songs from the past six decades help tell the tale of a colourful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion.
