2014 was jam-packed with some epic gaming releases, so it’s OK if you may have missed the following worthwhile adventures (and if you did play them, we hope you agree).

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is the sequel to the critically-acclaimed Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and the first-ever four-player co-op experience with Lara Croft.

Featuring stunning visuals and a brand-new story, players must work together to explore the temple, defeat hordes of enemies from the Egyptian underworld, solve devious puzzles, and avoid deadly traps. All the while, players will compete for treasure, powerful artifacts, and ultimate bragging rights.

Alien Isolation

Alien Isolation returned the Alien franchise to the video game platform to scare the living hell out of you, but reviews and a busy month kept the game from being in the limelight for very long.

Alien Isolation differs from other franchise experiences, as the game is not a shooter or high-octane action romp, but rather a sneak-’em-up survival horror where you play Amanda, the daughter of Ellen Ripley from the film series.

Alien: Isolation features only one Alien throughout its duration that cannot be killed, requiring the player to use stealth tactics in order to survive. Although the game features some weapons, they will be effective only against the human occupants and android “Working Joes”.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition

The under-appreciated open-world crime game, Sleeping Dogs, was rmastered and re-released on current-gen consoles last year, and rightfully so – because it’s a damn shame that it was so overlooked.

The game’s story follows Wei Shen, an undercover Chinese-American police officer on assignment to infiltrate the Sun On Yee Triad organisation. Gameplay centres on Shen’s fighting, shooting and parkour abilities, and on gadgets that can be used for combat and exploration. Players must complete missions to unlock content and continue the story, but they may instead wander the game’s open world and engage in activities both legal and criminal.

The Evil Within

Arguably the scariest looking game on current-gen systems dropped last year, but The Evil Within was caught up in the all the hype of other releases to be taken seriously.

Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami served as the game’s director, and the story follows veteran police detective Sebastian Castellanos as he investigates the scene of a gruesome mass murder, finding himself in a deranged world where hideous creatures wander among the dead.

The game plays out as a familiar third-person shooter in which scavenging for supplies and learning when to fight or run are key factors in surviving, much like Resident Evil, but for a new generation.

Sunset Overdrive

One of the Xbox One’s most unique exclusives released last year, as Insomniac Games (Ratchet & Clank, Resistance) delivered a new colourful and zany action-platformer, but it fell off the map pretty quickly.

Set in the fictional open world metropolis Sunset City in 2027, players control a fully customizable FizzCo employee who fights the OD’d, humans transformed into monsters after consuming an energy drink. Players wall-run and use zip-lines and grind rails to swiftly navigate Sunset City, and have a large weapon arsenal to use in action, and yes… it’s as crazy as it sounds.
