Keeping your PC up to industry standard or up to your own liking in order to be the ultimate media and gaming powerhouse, requires constant upgrading of specific components and hardware. As we are all green with envy after witnessing all the amazing pc tech from CES in January, we will be waiting alot longer for such hardware to hit retail shelves. South Africa’s ecommerce is just starting to take off, with Kalahari, Wantitall, Nivo and now Takealot being the main online retailers selling pretty much everything from books, DVD’s, games and electronics to clothing.

Now the main problem is that they dont have a large variety of computer hardware and accessories. There are however some very good online stores that specialize in everything computers, whether it be mainstream or enthusiast. Here is a list that gives a brief overview of each one, their area and range of products.

1. Prophecy Shop. The prophecy shop has been around for a long time and has become well known within the ecommerce industry. Their forums are the one of the best places for trading second hand computer goods. It’s well administered and free of scammers and cheats. If its online classifieds that your after then prophecy forums are the place.

2. Computersonly. Another favourite that has been around for a long time. A great bunch of guys that handle each transaction professionally. They are friendly and primarily stock well known brands such as Asus, Gigabyte, Nvidia, AMD, intel etc. They have a great newsletter that they send out to members every month notifying of specials and new products.

3. Ikonicit. Located in the Fourways/Magaliessig area, they have one of the biggest product listings and provide outstanding service. They have also recently launched Ikonicbids. A bidding system that works by placeing votes for a product which is constantly counting down. The person that has the current bid when the timer runs out gets the product at the current value.

4. Sybaritic. One of the smaller etailers, located in Kya Sands.

5. Rebeltech. Still one of the newer online shops and growing rapidly. They have an excellent range of products and are located in the Bryanston area.

6. Rampage-gaming. Probably the newest etailer and still growing.

7. Zaps. Zaps is probably the most well known online and walk-in computer stores in Gauteng. They have been going for years ever since the Brightwater Commons in randburg was Formerly called the Randburg Waterfront. You will be able to buy almost anything computed and gaming related from them.

8. Evetech. Located in Pretoria, they specialize in pre-built gaming pc’s with the absolute latest products. They also make pc’s to order and are starting to sell hardware.

I agree that the Prophecy shop, as well as the Carbonite classified is a brialliant site.

I don’t agree ikonicit, or ikonicbids has excellent service. They don’t respond to emails and the bidding site is slow and crashes often.

Re John, Thanks for the input. Taking a look at the services a couple months after I wrote this, I have changed my mind and agree with you that Ikonic have dropped their service quality. Their bidding system is seen by many as a sort of gambling system which seems to me as though they are getting greedy. Shops such as rebeltech are seriously impressing me as their prices are fantastic and their product listing is hard to beat.

Another favourite I didnt initially mention is Landmark computers. Which have also been around for quite sometime.

Landmark is definitely one of my favorite stores to deal with. Another one I found on myBroadband is a company called Solid Computing. They don’t have the biggest range but go out of their way for customers. Rampage is the worst, I had to pay for courier charges for a DOA product which was then returned to me
