2017 BMW 5 Series Takes Comfort & Agility to a New Level
BMW brings the noise with the latest entry into the coveted 5 Series.
BMW has always made notable changes to its 5 Series fleet with each model varient, and the German luxury aficionados have now introduced some subtle yet standout tweaks to the 2017 5 Series that BMW veterans and interested onlookers will appreciate.
The new, faster kid on the block
Among the new features are redesigned headlights that connect to a restyled kidney grille fitted with aerodynamic shutters, reshaped lower air intakes, and sharpened character lines that give the car a stronger presence on the road. This seventh generation of the mid-size sedan is slightly longer than the last one, and partly because of a new chassis, it’s as much as 100 kgs lighter than its predecessor, which improves its handling and efficiency.
Office on-the-go
BMW also boasts that the new 5 Series is the essential businessman’s car, and the interior features definitely agree with that sentiment. The new 5er is equipped with the latest iDrive system that will display navigation, telephone functions, entertainment and vehicle functions on a high-resolution 10.25-inch screen. Furthermore, the optional new iDrive Touch Controller, for example, allows you to enter letters and numbers with your own handwriting. And thanks to practical USB and Bluetooth connectivity, you can connect your smartphone to the vehicle and use a wide range of Office functions. You can also view your contact data or schedule at any time in the Control Display.
Under the hood
Judging a book by it’s cover can be dangerous, but with the new 5 Series, what you see is what you get. Complimenting the sublime exterior is a new 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine in the 530i, which will offer 185 kW and 350 Nm of torque with a claimed fuel consumption figure of 5.4 L/100 km – an improvement upon last year’s model.
The 540i features a 6 cylinder, 3.0-litre engine offering 250 kW and 450 Nm of torque in the 540i.
On the diesel front, the 520d will be powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel engine offering 140 kW and 400 Nm of torque with fuel consumption figures of 4.1 L/100 km (manual) and 4.0 L/100 km (8-speed automatic).
The 530d with its six-cylinder, 3.0-litre diesel engine will offer 195 kW and 620 Nm of torque. Claimed fuel consumption for this derivative is 4.5 L/100 km. A plug-in hybrid model will be launched at a later stage in the form of the 185 kW 530e iPerformance.
