Brumbies overcome underwhelming Reds

A revitalised Brumbies side overcame the Reds in a convincing 24-6 performance in Canberra, marking a solid start to the Brumbies 2013 Super Rugby season.
The first round action got off to a quick start, as Mike Harris slotted an early penalty to give the 2011 champions a 3-0 lead.
The Reds looked to be in control of the opening moments of the match, as the Brumbies discipline was lacking, giving Harris some more shorts at goal, but not managing to split the uprights.
The home team then turned the tides as Brumbies fullback Jesse Mogg chased down a kick behind the Reds defence, which sat up perfectly for him, resulting in the first try of the match.
Both teams exchanged some attacking phases at one another, until the Reds were awarded a penalty, which Harris slotted with ease. 6-5 to the Reds.
Reds Winger Digby Ioane is penalised for being caught in the breakdown, and Nic White steps up and takes the penalty – 6-8 to the Brumbies.
The Reds continue the ill-discipline and are caught offsides from an up-and-under. Nic White once again steps ups, but misses the shot at goal.
The Brumbies began building up some momentum, throwing some threatening attacking phases 10m out from the Reds’ line, but some impressive defence from the visitors kept the Brumbies at bay.
The Brumbies did manage to get some points when in the Reds’ half though, as an early scrum engagement gave Jesse Mogg an opportunity to grab another 3 points – which he did.
New Brumbies recruit David Pocock was penalised at the breakdown, Mike Harris stood up to take the kick, but didn’t get the distance, leaving the score at 11-6 to the home side.
Jesse Mogg got another go at goal, at separated the uprights to give the Brumbies an 8 point advantage (14-6).
Some great attacking phases and pressure from the Brumbies resulted in a penalty for the home team, Jesse Mogg’s kick drifted right of the posts.
The Reds began to hit back, with Cooper taking the ball flat and putting other players into space, however, play broke down and Brumbies were awarded another penalty. Nic White makes it 17-6 to the Brumbies.
Just as things couldn’t get worse for the Reds, and with time running out, Quade Cooper threw a long skip pass that was intercepted by Brumbies fullback Jesse Mogg, who went in under the posts. Coleman added the extra 2, which wrapped up the match.
