Brumbies smash Waratahs in Canberra
Brumbies make a statement with their 35-6 win over the Waratahs.
The Brumbies defeated an underwhelming Waratahs side 35-6 in Canberra on Saturday, 9 March 2013, for Round 4 of the 2013 Super Rugby tournament.
Despite the Waratahs being the first to score through a McKibbin penalty in the opening minutes, the rest of the game was dominated by the Brumbies, as they ran in four tries to secure themselves a bonus point.
The first of the four tries came from Ben Mowen, who was on the end of a powerful driving maul that disintegrated the Waratahs pack.
The second came through Christian Lealiifano, who picked up a great grubber through the defensive line by Jessie Mogg.
Some great hands by the forwards, and a perfect offload by Fotu Auelua, put Fijian-born winger Henry Speight into some space to race away for the corner.
The bonus point try was undoubtedly the most spectacular. Within the dying minutes, Jessie Mogg made a fantastic break from within the Brumbies’ 22 and put Robbie Coleman through a gap. Coleman chipped over the last Waratahs defender, re-gathered and scored his team’s forth try.
The Brumbies’ performance will give the Canberra side a lot of confidence heading into their South African tour, where their first opposition is the Sharks in Durban on 16 March 2013.
