Durban Gets Maboneng-Like Revival
Durban is getting a rebirth through the revitalisation of the inner-city development initiative.

While Johannesburg has received a huge boost in the inner-city environment, much thanks to the regeneration of the Maboneng district, Durban is undergoing a few changes to breathe some new life into the city.
Jonathan Liebmann of Propertuity is heading up the revival, and is partnering with a host of Durban professionals for the transformation to help make Durban a true new-generation destination. This will also all be in collaboration with the local municipality, local architects and artists.
“We want to create a neighbourhood that uplifts the area, while taking into account the fascinating existing essence of Durban. Our intention is not to roll out a model of what has been done so far in Maboneng, but to rather look at this as an entirely new project that stays true to Propertuity’s core values and principles, driven by a new team of Durbanites”, says Propertuity developer Jonathan Liebmann.
Some of the new additions to the CBD include a tower construction that will feature apartments and a hotel, the redevelopment of two famous art deco buildings in the city centre, and the launch of a weekly food market and exhibition space for arts and architecture inside an existing 800sqm warehouse space on Morrison Street.
Andrew Makin of designworkshop:sa says “We are collaborating with Propertuity to design and deliver a number of mixed residential, hotel, commercial, cultural and retail projects in Rivertown. They will be the first evidence of the transformation of the Durban CBD into an inspiringly diverse and super-liveable environment and the refocus on the global resurgence of urban life and its unbeatable economic, cultural and social benefits”.
