Rugby league convert Israel Folau made an impressive start to his rugby union stint, as he managed to cross the tryline twice for the Waratahs in their trial match against the Melbourne Rebels.

Despite scepticism, Folau showed that he could transition from the NRL to Super Rugby, and helped his news side to the 24-16 pre-season win.

“It was certainly very enjoyable playing my first rugby game and I can get a lot of confidence out of finishing this game well,” said Folau.

The 23-year old was sent to the sin-bin for a rick infringement, but on the whole, looked at home in the fullback position.

“It was pretty challenging and that was what I expected.  I got a bit of everything today, I got yellow carded as well, but I’m looking forward to next week.

“I found the positional play really challenging, mainly in defence, and from fullback it’s very different to the way a rugby league fullback plays,” added Folau.

The new recruit’s first try was one of the highlights of the match, as he picked up an awkward pass with one hand and stepped inside to beat three players before crossing the tryline.

“Obviously his natural talent showed on a couple of occasions very well and I think he looked pretty comfortable really,” said new Head Coach Michael Cheika.

The Warathas’ opening match of the 2013 Super Rugby season will be against the Reds at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on 23 February 2013.
