Juan Smith retires from rugby
Springbok flanker calls career short as of immediate effect
Springbok and Cheetahs flanker Juan Smith has announced his early retirement from the game of rugby.
Smith is considered an experience Springbok, having accumulated 69 tests for the national side, as well as being part of the 2007 World Cup-winning squad, and the Tri-Nations champions in 2009.
“This is a disappointing day for rugby as we see one of the greats of modern Springbok rugby go into retirement,” said Oregan Hoskins, SARU President.
“Juan was a vital cog for every team in which he played and he will be sorely missed, not only by the Springboks, but also by the Cheetahs,” added Hoskins.
Smith’s decision comes following an Achilles injury from 2011, which, despite rehabilitation, hasn’t allowed the 31-year old to return to full form.
“As one of the hard men of South African rugby, Juan distinguished himself as someone that always put the team first. He wasn’t someone who looked for glory, but knew what was needed to get the job done. He never gave less than his very best,” said Hoskins.
“We wish Juan all the best for his future and hope to still see him involved in rugby in some way. Thank you for your great service to rugby in South Africa in the past 10 years.”
Juan Smith was regarded as one of the best loose forwards in the game, and his presence in the domestic and international rugby scene will be missed.

I had a little cry about this as I lay in a foetal position last night. It could also have been something else though? Seriously though, my favourite Bok since about 2005 and one of the greats to wear the green and gold. Legend!

He always managed to cause such havoc! Sad he has to step away from the game, and JUST as he was making his return!
