Stormers eye Mapoe
The Stormers need a speedy outside back, and have set their sights on Lionel Mapoe.
The Stormers are in the market for a speedy back, and have set their sights on Lions wing/centre Lionel Mapoe.
The Stormers are reportedly looking to acquire the services of the 25-year old for the 2014 Super Rugby season.
The Stormers will be in need of a versatile speedster in the backline, as winger Bryan Habana and fullback Joe Pietersen have departed for French clubs Toulon and Biarritz respectively, while Gerhaard van den Heever is set to leave for Munster following the conclusion of the Currie Cup.
Mapoe had a stint with the Cheetahs in 2010, before moving to the Lions in 2011, and playing with the Bulls on loan for the 2013 season.

I definitely think Mapoe needs to think of his future. With Habana moving to France i think it would make sense for him to stay at the Stormers as there is going to be a gap in the team that he can easily play in.
This is depending on the Lions not making it back into Super Rugby. I’m sure they are going to look at building a stronger squad to avoid relegation and prove that they are the Pride of Gauteng once again!

Agreed, and Mapoe can slide into the outside centre position and show that he has what it takes to play alongside Jean de Villiers.
Mapoe is definitely a talent – he just needs to right set-up and environment to show what he’s got.

Ya, and it would be great for him to link up with De Villiers. Would be a good mix of youth, experience and pace. It could be a good combo going into the RWC2015.
Sadly, if he does choose to go it will leave the Lions with the title of “a feeder club for the bigger clubs.” I suppose that debate is for another day…
