Super Rugby vs Heineken Cup winners to battle?
Toulon rugby president wants to see a clash of the titans for the “World Cup of Clubs”.
Talks about a possible match-up between the winners of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres most prestigious tournaments have been around for a while, but Top 14 club Toulon’s president Mourad Boudjellal has said that he wants to make it a reality.
Boudjellal explained that he wants the winner of the Super Rugby tournament to meet with the victors of the Heineken Cup in a two-match spectacle.
Boudjellal said that he hopes to create the “World Cup of Clubs”, and has even applied for the name with the INPI (French Nation Industrial Property Institute).
“We will try create this match on an economical model that will benefit both clubs – especially the players,” said Boudjellal.
The challenge that has existed in the past was to schedule the fixtures, as both hemisphere’s respective competitions take up a lot season.

I really hope this happens, would be such an awesome games to watch! It will answer one of rugby’s major questions: Which are better, Southern hemisphere clubs or Northern hemisphere clubs?
I think, if this does ever happen it should stay as an exhibition match as the end of the season and not try create a Rugby Champions League. The seasons would become way too long!

Ya, agreed! It would have to remain a separate exhibition match as you say. Something along the lines of a Barbarians match.
Well, it seems Boudjellal is keen, and he has the money and means, so let’s see what happens. Hopefully in 2014.

It would be something to look forward to and would bring in a lot of revenue for the two clubs participating. Hopefully there will be a South African team in the final by then!
Is there any truth to the NZ and Aus Rugby union’s wanting to leave Super Rugby??
